'Skull' urged to join Twitter

A pretty good game of Test cricket is developing at the Gabba, with a 158-run sixth wicket stand between Dan Vettori and Dean Brownlie ensuring the match will run well into the weekend - perhaps the full five days.

But despite this honourable fight-back from New Zealand, which had been struggling at 5 at 96, the focus of cricket followers diverted from the field of play on day two.

ABC Grandstand's larrikin expert Kerry "Skull" O'Keeffe is not on Twitter and he does not really want to be, but it seems he is a wanted man.

A hash tag (for non tweeters, a discussion topic) popped up on the social network on Thursday to '#getskullontwitter'.

By Friday morning it was trending as one of the most popular discussions in the world.

The comments flooded in:

@cassparkles; "I wish twitter had sound so we could hear his laugh."

@sellbot: "Could Skull be faster to 1 million followers than @CharlieSheen?"

@Tom_Jeffries11: "It has to be done! clearly time for debuts."

O'Keeffe is flattered by the response and while apprehensive, he has not ruled out joining Twitter.

"I am considering it, but it looks a bit Gen Y," he said with a characteristic chuckle.

"People say he can be in depth but I am shallow, so my potential tweets will reveal my shallowness and I'd rather keep it to myself."

There is no doubt life in the land of Twitter will take some adjusting to for 62-year-old O'Keeffe should he take the plunge.

To compare social media with cricket, Twitter is to Facebook what Twenty20 is to Tests - the abbreviated form - and O'Keeffe will need to bare this in mind.

His famous 'frog in the bank' joke could never be told in 140 characters but that is more than enough for a few cricketing insights and humorous sledges, exactly what the masses crave.

It is time to unite for the betterment of the game and keep the campaign going until we '#getskullontwitter'.
