White finds batting form as record looms

Updated February 12, 2012 13:06:42

With some much-needed runs and a personal record looming, Cameron White now has his sights on leading Victoria into the Sheffield Shield final.

White, whose batting form has been below-par all summer, scored 147 for his Melbourne club side Richmond against Prahran on Saturday.

White overcame a bizarre start to the match, in which play started on a pitch wrongly measured at two metres longer than it should have been, to address the issues which have plagued his season.

The 28-year-old's national contract would appear in jeopardy after his difficult summer and losing the Australian Twenty20 captaincy.

But White's timely return to form comes as he prepares to break Bill Lawry's long-standing record for captaining Victoria on the most occasions in the Bushrangers' Shield clash with South Australia starting
on Monday at the MCG.

"It was just great to spend some time in the middle and the game obviously starts tomorrow, so it was good practice," White said on Sunday ahead of his 57th first-class match leading Victoria.

"For whatever reason yesterday, it seemed to work out.

"It was nice to build an innings, and it just reminds you that you can still do it."

Victoria is fourth on the Shield ladder.

But a big win against the Redbacks will give the Bushrangers huge momentum and Shield final destiny in their own hands going into the next match against second-placed Western Australia.

"We're sitting not too far away in the Shield competition, so this is a big game and off to Perth after that, so really our next two games will determine whether we get into the final," he said.

"It makes this game (against the Redbacks) even more crucial.

"We've got two more of our games at home too, so if we can win both of those, we'll be pretty close to a Shield final berth."

The Bushrangers are strengthened with the return of national representatives Peter Siddle and Aaron Finch.

Siddle returns from Test duties, while Finch is back after playing for Australia's Twenty20 side in the series against India.

The Vics beat bottom side South Australia by 186 runs in their Shield match in Adelaide last week, further building their confidence.

Bailey replaces White as T20 skipper

Updated January 23, 2012 17:53:37

Tasmanian George Bailey is the new Australian Twenty20 captain replacing Cameron White, who has been cut from the squad to face India in two matches next month.

The other major selection shock is the return of veteran spinner Brad Hogg to international cricket.

Hogg, who is nearly 41 years of age and had retired back in 2008, revealed chief selector John Iverarity informed him of the decision early on Monday morning.

The left-armer has been in superb form for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, a big reason for the side reaching the final of the competition.

"He woke me up at seven o'clock in the morning, the old bugger," Hogg said.

"I was pumping my fist before I answered it.

"It's great news. I hardly slept last night. It's just like being a kid again and another Christmas present under the Christmas tree."

Hogg will play his first match for Australia since his one-day farewell against India in March 2008.

Bailey, 29, who plays alongside White in the Melbourne Stars in the BBL, will lead Australia against the Indians in Sydney and Melbourne.

Bailey, who is one of five Stars players to be named, captained Australia A in the drawn tour match against New Zealand at Allan Border Field in November.

Tasmanian Tigers skipper for the one-day and Sheffield Shield competition, Bailey is a surprise selection after compiling very modest Big Bash figures.

Inverarity insisted picking Bailey was not a difficult decision for the national selection panel.

"The NSP has been discussing this squad for about six weeks and has unanimously decided on the squad, the captain and the vice-captain," Inverarity said.

"The selectors consider this to be a very well balanced squad and look forward to the team acquitting itself very well.

"The panel unanimously favoured George Bailey as captain.

"George is a very good T20 player with a sound record. He is widely respected and regarded as an outstanding captain, having had sustained success in this role.

"The NSP has the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka in September to the fore in its mind with these selections."

White scored just 55 runs at an average of eight, but Bailey only managed 114 runs at 19 himself for the tournament.

There have been a number of changes to the Australian squad which toured South Africa late last year, mostly due to injury.

Notable omissions include then vice-captain Shane Watson and young bowlers Pat Cummins and James Pattinson.

Australia play India at Sydney's Olympic stadium on February 1 with the second game two days later at the MCG.

Australian T20 Squad:
George Bailey (capt), David Warner (vice capt) Travis Birt, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Hogg, David Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Clint McKay, Matthew Wade.

White fined for dissent

Updated December 22, 2011 23:43:34

Melbourne Stars captain Cameron White has been fined for showing dissent towards an umpire during his team's Big Bash League match against Brisbane at the Gabba on Tuesday night.

White pleaded guilty on Thursday night to the two breaches of Cricket Australia's code of conduct in the Stars' eight-run win over the Heat.

He was fined a total of $1,500 as a result of the separate incidents in the seventh and 19th overs of the Heat's run chase.

The Stars' next match is against the Sydney Sixers at the SCG on December 27.

White charged with umpire dissent

Updated December 21, 2011 19:17:44

Melbourne Stars skipper Cameron White has been booked for breaching Cricket Australia's behaviour code in his side's Twenty20 Big Bash League win over Brisbane Heat on Tuesday night.

White was reported for showing serious dissent at an umpire's decision in the seventh over of the Heat chase and showing dissent at a decision in the 19th over.

The matter was referred to the CA code of behaviour commission and will be heard by Glen Williams QC on Thursday evening.

The Stars won by eight runs at the Gabba, having restricted Brisbane to 7 for 169 chasing 177, with star leg spinner Shane Warne taking 1 for 22.

White dropped from one-day team

Updated July 6, 2011 14:13:00

Dumped all-rounder Cameron White has described his omission from Australia's one-day squad for next month's Sri Lanka tour as a "kick in the guts".

On a mixed day for the Victorian, White was axed from the one-day team but retained as Australia's Twenty20 captain for the tour when the two squads were named on Wednesday.

The writing was on the wall for White when he was dropped from the team during the recent one-day series in Bangladesh following a barren run at the World Cup.

But it did not soften the blow on Wednesday.

"It is no secret I haven't been in the best of form of late but I was hopeful I would still be in the squad. It's definitely a kick in the guts," White said.

White exits the one-day squad along with Callum Ferguson as fellow batsmen Shaun Marsh and David Hussey return.

White hoped to break back into the one-day side but wondered when he would get the next chance to press his claims.

"I don't have a lot of cricket for a little while now," he said.

"Outside of a couple of T20 games I will be back playing for Victoria and scoring as many runs as I can.

"I just have to go back and get better and hopefully get another opportunity at some stage."

White did not consider himself a Twenty20 specialist.

"T20 is such a different game and moving towards having specialist players - (but) I am not saying I am in that boat," he said.

Australian Test and one-day skipper Michael Clarke backed White to break back into the 50-over game.

"It is a tough call because he is a wonderful player and has been a big part of the one-day team for a while now," said Clarke.

"I am very confident he will continue to work hard in the nets and keep putting the runs on the board whether it be for Victoria or in Twenty20.

"On the other hand it is great to see young Shaun Marsh and David Hussey back in the team."

White averaged just 17.5 in seven innings before being ousted by South Australia's Ferguson on the Bangladesh tour.

Marsh returns to the one-day side after missing the World Cup due to a hamstring injury while Hussey is back in both the 50-over game and Twenty20 sides after missing the Bangladesh tour due to the birth of his first child.

Young quick James Pattinson features in both squads while Xavier Doherty is the one-day spinner and Stephen O'Keefe is the Twenty20 tweaker.

Australia will play two Twenty20s, five one-day internationals and three Tests in Sri Lanka.

Twenty20 players fly out on July 30 and the remaining one-day squad members on August 5.

The Test squad will be announced later this month.

Twenty20 squad: Cameron White (c), Shane Watson (vc), Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, John Hastings, David Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Stephen O'Keefe, James Pattinson, Steven Smith, David Warner

ODI squad: Michael Clarke (c), Shane Watson (vc), Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Brad Haddin, John Hastings, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Steven Smith
