Male escort fined for Aussie cricketer break-in

Updated September 28, 2012 22:22:09

A Sri Lankan court has convicted a 21-year-old man who broke into the hotel rooms of two Australian cricketers and offered them sex during the ongoing World Twenty20.

The Sri Lankan, named as Abdul Karim, was fined 1,000 rupees ($7.39) and handed a one-month suspended jail term after he pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering.

The man breached supposedly tight security last Monday at the luxury Cinnamon Grand hotel in central Colombo where the Australian team were staying ahead of their game against India on Friday.

"The man had gone into a player's room offering his services as a male escort," a police officer involved in the case told AFP.

"The player refused and he barged into another room when the Australians alerted hotel security."

The authorities had declared floors occupied by cricketers as out-of-bounds as part of security for players during the September 18-October 7 tournament that was billed as the same level as for visiting heads of state.

"No harm was done, but the intrusion was a serious embarrassment," a senior official coordinating security for the tournament told AFP.

"Since then, we have reviewed the arrangements and taken some new measures."

A source in the hotel told AFP that Karim had worked previously at the Cinnamon Grand while employed for a local auditing firm.

Neither police nor security officials named the players involved.

"It was a minor and isolated incident involving an over-enthusiastic cricket fan, which was reported immediately by the Australian team management," said Sami ul-Hasan, a spokesman for the International Cricket Council (ICC).

"The trespasser has been dealt with by the law and the security for the tournament has been tightened," he added.

The Australian team declined to comment when contacted.

Gibson fined for DRS criticism

Updated April 21, 2012 10:18:51

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after comments made about the decision review system (DRS) during the second Test against Australia.

The current series is not using the full technology, such as Hotspot and Snicko, and Gibson claimed his team had suffered from some decisions.

Gibson argued that if the full technology was not available then it would be better not to use the DRS at all.

The ICC says Gibson's comments broke their Code of Conduct and that he will be fined 20 per cent of his match fee.

The rain-affected second Test was drawn leaving Australia 1-0 up heading into next week's third and final match of the series in Dominica.

Kohli fined for abusive gesture

Updated January 05, 2012 13:11:43

Indian batsman Virat Kohli has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee after making an abusive gesture to supporters at the second Test against Australia at the SCG.

Kohli was caught giving fans a one-fingered gesture during day two and was subsequently hit with a level-two offence by match referee Ranjan Madugalle.

Indian team media manager GS Walia said Kohli had been informed of the charge on Thursday morning and pleaded guilty to making the gesture.

"The matter has been sorted out ... the player felt guilty and sorry and the matter has been closed," Walia said.

"When he went to the match referee, he said sorry and that out of emotions I must have done it."

Walia refused to discuss allegations by Kohli he was abused by sections of the SCG crowd and had given the gesture in response to that abuse.

He insisted the matter was closed, making it unlikely the Indians will lodge a complaint with the SCG Trust over any alleged misbehaviour by the crowd.

Kohli, fielding at the boundary for much of the day, tweeted that he had been sorely provoked before responding with the finger gesture.

"I agree cricketers dont have to retaliate. What when the crowd says the worst things about your mother and sister. The worst I've heard," he posted.

He was fined a total of $1,500 as a result of the separate incidents in the seventh and 19th overs of the Heat's run chase.

The Stars' next match is against the Sydney Sixers at the SCG on December 27.

Beer fined for clash with Smith

Updated December 01, 2011 14:07:07

Cricket Australia (CA) has fined one-time Test spinner Michael Beer 50 per cent of his match fee for clashing with New South Wales' Steve Smith in Wednesday's one-day cup match at the SCG.

Western Australian Beer was reported by both on-field umpires Geoff Joshua and Paul Wilson for making inappropriate and deliberate contact with Smith.

The incident happened while Beer was bowling in the 35th over of the first innings on Wednesday.

Beer pleaded guilty to breaching CA's code of behaviour.

Beer, who played his only Test against England in Sydney at the start of this year, has been displaced in the national side by Nathan Lyon.

Beer recorded match figures of 1 for 174 while playing for Australia A in the recent tour match against New Zealand.
