Malinga sets record as Perth hit all time low

Lasith Malinga took 6 for 7, the best ever figures in domestic Twenty20, as the Melbourne Stars dismissed the Perth Scorchers for 69 - the lowest ever Big Bash score - en route to a 10-wicket win.

Amid farcical scenes, the Stars returned to the field on 0 for 29 from two overs after a rain delay and were required to face one ball before being awarded the game via the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Most onlookers believed five overs had to be played to bring about a result, but the umpires ruled that as the Stars had already exceeded the necessary target needed at that point in the game (6), they were awarded the match.

Scorchers captain Simon Katich did not like the finish to the game at all with the sides coming back out for one ball after over an hour of constant rain.

But he admitted to not deserving to get a point anyway thanks to Malinga's spell.

"He bowled beautifully," Katich said.

"He bowled yorkers that were on the money from the word go, swung the ball and then he had good variations with his slower ball and the odd bumper.

"Unfortunately we just couldn't counter it and he won them the game singlehandedly.

"It was farcical, but they deserved to win and we don't hide away from that. It probably should have been (called off), but that's the way it goes.

"It's never going to be fair because they did deserve to win the game, but at the same time the conditions still have to be playable for both teams and we had a lot of rain in that hour."

Malinga's new-ball partner James Faulkner began the carnage in the Perth innings dismissing Herschelle Gibbs (0) and added the wicket of Katich (0) after Malinga had bowled Marcus North (1) in his first over.

The Sri Lankan slinger took the wicket of Marcus Stoinis (9) in the following over to leave the Scorchers decimated at 4 for 16.

Malinga himself was pleased with the way the Stars bounced back from last Friday's loss to the Renegades.

"Everyone was waiting for the win after we lost the first game," he said.

"We know we have a good side and we have a long way to go in the tournament still, but this win is very important to us.

"Last week was a tough and tight game, but after that everyone did well in this match and we now will try and take that into the future matches."

Adam Voges and rookie Hilton Cartwright steadied the shop until the end of the powerplay but Stars skipper Shane Warne forced a breakthrough in his second over trapping the former leg before.

Malinga then returned to the attack had top-scorer Cartwright (17) caught at midwicket, trapped the next two leg before, before bowling Joe Mennie (2) to take his haul to six.

Luke Wright then took the final wicket of Michael Beer to leave Perth with the unwanted record of the lowest ever total in Australian Twenty20 competition - beating New South Wales' total of 71 against Western Australia, also at the WACA Ground - in 2010.

The only cricketer to record better bowling figures than Malinga is Malaysian part-time spinner Arul Suppiah who took 6 for 5 for Somerset against Glamorgan in 2011.

The Stars in response reached their target in two overs, with Luke Wright hitting 23 off 11 balls, before rain forced the players off.

Rob Quiney (1) faced the lone ball after the resumption, a swinging ball down the leg side from Cartwright.

White finds batting form as record looms

With some much-needed runs and a personal record looming, Cameron White now has his sights on leading Victoria into the Sheffield Shield final.

White, whose batting form has been below-par all summer, scored 147 for his Melbourne club side Richmond against Prahran on Saturday.

White overcame a bizarre start to the match, in which play started on a pitch wrongly measured at two metres longer than it should have been, to address the issues which have plagued his season.

The 28-year-old's national contract would appear in jeopardy after his difficult summer and losing the Australian Twenty20 captaincy.

But White's timely return to form comes as he prepares to break Bill Lawry's long-standing record for captaining Victoria on the most occasions in the Bushrangers' Shield clash with South Australia starting
on Monday at the MCG.

"It was just great to spend some time in the middle and the game obviously starts tomorrow, so it was good practice," White said on Sunday ahead of his 57th first-class match leading Victoria.

"For whatever reason yesterday, it seemed to work out.

"It was nice to build an innings, and it just reminds you that you can still do it."

Victoria is fourth on the Shield ladder.

But a big win against the Redbacks will give the Bushrangers huge momentum and Shield final destiny in their own hands going into the next match against second-placed Western Australia.

"We're sitting not too far away in the Shield competition, so this is a big game and off to Perth after that, so really our next two games will determine whether we get into the final," he said.

"It makes this game (against the Redbacks) even more crucial.

"We've got two more of our games at home too, so if we can win both of those, we'll be pretty close to a Shield final berth."

The Bushrangers are strengthened with the return of national representatives Peter Siddle and Aaron Finch.

Siddle returns from Test duties, while Finch is back after playing for Australia's Twenty20 side in the series against India.

The Vics beat bottom side South Australia by 186 runs in their Shield match in Adelaide last week, further building their confidence.

Wright smashes record ton in Stars win

Melbourne Stars opener Luke Wright blasted the highest-ever score in Australian domestic Twenty20 cricket, as his side downed the Hobart Hurricanes to keep their Big Bash League (BBL) finals hopes alive.

Wright made 117 off just 60 balls, smashing nine sixes and eight fours to eclipse the previous best of 111 set by Michael Dighton in 2007, as the Stars won by 19 runs at Bellerive Oval.

The Englishman dispatched Hurricanes bowler Rhett Lockyear for three successive sixes in the 12th over before reaching his century off just 44 balls with another six off Doherty.

With fellow opener Rob Quiney (62 off 50), Wright shared a highest-ever domestic Twenty20 partnership of 172.

Not helped by five dropped catches, some of them sitters, ladder leaders Hobart conceded the highest score of the BBL - 3 for 203 - and the fourth-highest in Australian domestic Twenty20.

"Records are one of the nice things but the main thing was we won tonight," said Wright, who has played 46 one-day internationals for England.

"That was what we really needed to keep us in this competition.

"I felt pretty good in the last game but didn't go on, so I just wanted to try and carry on and hit the ball hard."

Hurricanes skipper Doherty lamented another poor bowling and fielding performance.

"They just had a licence to bat really and there was no real pressure on them at all," he said.

Shane Warne's visit to Hobart had attracted a first-ever sell-out crowd for a domestic match at Bellerive hoping to see the ladder-leading Hurricanes lock up a home semi-final.

The Stars, though, left them stunned after captain Cameron White won the toss and his side leapfrogged into third place on the ladder with the third victory of their campaign.

Rearguard actions of 51 off just 22 balls from the BBL's highest run scorer Travis Birt - also including three straight sixes off Clint McKay - and 55 off 37 from Owais Shah were not enough, as the home side finished on 9 for 184.

The Hurricanes remain on top of the ladder on net run rate, equal with the Perth Scorchers on eight points, and face Melbourne Renegades in their last match on January 18.

The Stars are starting to live up to their name and will next meet Adelaide Strikers on January 19 attempting to secure their spot in the semi-finals.

Sehwag's record 219 fires India to victory

Virender Sehwag smashed the highest score in one-day cricket as India flattened the West Indies by 153 runs to take a decisive 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Sehwag hammered a scintillating 219 off 149 balls to lift India to its best one-day total of 5 for 418, before the West Indies were bowled out for 265.

Debutant leg-spinner Rahul Sharma picked up three wickets in his first three overs as the tourists were outplayed despite a defiant 96 from wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Sehwag plundered 25 boundaries and seven sixes during his 149-ball blitz, joining compatriot Sachin Tendulkar as the only batsmen in history to score double-centuries in the 50-over format.

Sehwag moved past Tendulkar's 200 not out - against South Africa in Gwalior last year - in the 44th over when, on 197, he cut Andre Russell to the point fence.

He was finally dismissed in the 47th over when he was caught in the deep off Kieron Pollard and was clapped off the field by the entire West Indies team and some 30,000 jubilant home fans.

"I was cheering for Sachin when he got his double-hundred and it's great to emulate that," the 33-year-old Sehwag said.

"The pitch was great and allowed you to play your shots. I think you can get a double-hundred like this when you're experienced. The last time I played 47 overs I got 175, this time I got 200."

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said there was little his team could do to stop Sehwag's onslaught.

"Sehwag has destroyed bowlers all over the world, not only us," said Sammy.

"We bowled some good balls but he played better shots.

"The pitch was a belter but we got pegged back by their spinners. They kept taking wickets and made in hard for us. It is good that in the end we managed to get past 250."

Sehwag's blistering knock helped India surpass its previous highest one-day total of 7 for 414 against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2009.

It was Sehwag's 15th three-figure knock in one-day cricket and the first since making 175 against Bangladesh in the opening match of the World Cup in Dhaka in February this year.

Sehwag, who is captaining India in the series in the absence of the rested Mahendra Singh Dhoni, had managed just 46 runs in the previous three matches.

But he found the right conditions on the run-laden pitch at the Holkar stadium in Indore to strike form ahead of the Test series in Australia starting later this month.

Sehwag, who was dropped on 170 by Sammy in the covers, put on 176 for the first wicket with Gautam Gambhir (67) and 140 for the second with Suresh Raina (55).

The West Indies suffered a blow before the start when star batsman Darren Bravo was ruled out of the must-win game due to a hamstring strain.

Bravo was replaced by Kieran Powell.

The final match will be played in Chennai on Sunday.

Somerset spinner sets T20 record

Somerset spinner Arul Suppiah took world-record Twenty20 figures of 6 for 5 in a five-wicket victory away to Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Suppiah's record figures, which bettered Sohail Tanvir's 6 for 14 for Rajasthan against Chennai in the Indian Premier League in in May 2008, came from 3.4 overs as all 10 Glamorgan wickets fell to the Somerset spinners.

Glamorgan, put into bat, had no answer to Suppiah and Somerset's other two spinners, Murali Kartik and Max Waller, as it was dismissed for just 98 - its second-worst total in the tournament - in just 17.4 overs of an 18-overs-per-side contest which was reduced because of rain.

West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard made 31 not out off 20 balls as Somerset won with 21 balls to spare.

Napier hits 16 sixes to equal world record

Essex all-rounder Graham Napier equalled the record for the number of sixes in a first-class ininngs when he struck 16 in a county match against Surrey overnight.

Napier cleared the boundary 16 times and hit 19 fours in a knock of 196 off 130 balls on the second day of the county championship game at Whitgift School in Croydon.

Australian Andrew Symonds struck 16 sixes for Gloucestershire against Glamorgan in 1995.

Napier, 31, is playing his first first-class game since June after suffering a back injury last season.

He also holds the record for number of sixes in Twenty20 cricket, hitting 16 in an innings of 152 against Sussex in 2008.
