Starc pulled from one-day squad

Australia will go into Sunday's second one-day international against Sri Lanka in Adelaide without the services of young paceman Mitchell Starc, who has suffered mild calf soreness.

Cricket Australia announced Starc's withdrawal from the side on Saturday morning, just hours after Australia's crushing 107-run victory over the tourists in which the 22-year-old took 1 for 25.

Team physio Alex Kountouris said he was not too worried about the niggle.

"Whilst we are not majorly concerned about it, we have withdrawn him from the game on Sunday as a precaution," he said in a statement.

"He will be reassessed over the next few days and is a possibility to play next weekend's matches against Sri Lanka if his symptoms resolve."

Australian selectors have called up Kane Richardson as cover for Starc.

"Kane has been called in as cover in the squad due to his impressive form in the limited overs formats this season," chief selector John Inverarity said in a statement.

"This provides another great opportunity for a young player as we look to build towards Cricket World Cup in 2015."

Right-armer Richardson is yet to make his Australian debut but has 16 domestic one-day caps and 20 Twenty20 games under his belt for South Australia and Adelaide Strikers.

Mendis stars in Sri Lanka one-day series win

Jeevan Mendis grabbed three wickets as Sri Lanka clinched the one-day series against New Zealand with a comfortable seven-wicket win in the fourth match in Hambantota on Sunday morning (AEDT).

Sri Lanka achieved a rain-revised target of 131 off 32 overs with more than five overs to spare to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The opening one-dayer was called off without a ball being bowled due to rain.

It was Sri Lanka's third successive win under the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method in the rain-hit series.

Opener Dinesh Chandimal (43), playing his first match of the series after replacing unfit opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Kumar Sangakkara (42 not out) added 87 for the second wicket to ensure their team's victory.

Sangakkara hit one six and five fours in his 55-ball knock.

"The bowlers stuck to their task. Batting under lights here was going to be tough but both Kumar and Chandimal batted very well and put up a decent partnership," said Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene.

"The win gives us an opportunity to experiment in the last game, but we will try to win."

Leg-spinner Mendis (3 for 15) earlier bowled Kane Williamson and Nathan McCullum with googlies in his third over before trapping Andrew Ellis leg-before in his next over, his three wickets coming off just five balls.

Man-of-the-match Mendis was superbly backed by fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara, who finished with 2 for 17 off five overs.

"I have been working hard for the last couple of months. I tried my best to get the hat-trick but I am happy with the three," said Mendis

Sri Lanka, who elected to field after winning the toss in overcast conditions, put in an impressive bowling performance to restrict New Zealand.

Brendon McCullum, who smashed left-arm spinner Rangana Herath over long-off for the first six of the match, top-scored for the tourists with 30 while Williamson and James Franklin each made 21.

"Sri Lanka played smart cricket and put us under pressure from the start. We are taking positives out from this game. Our bowlers bowled very well. We hope to at least get a win and avoid 4-0," said New Zealand captain Ross Taylor.

Sri Lanka got an early wicket when Kulasekara had opener Rob Nicol (11) caught by Upul Tharanga at mid-on in his third over.

Opener Bradley-John Watling, who scored half-centuries in the last two matches, could make just 15 this time as he was run out while Taylor made six before being caught behind off seamer Thisara Perera.

New Zealand suffered another blow when hard-hitting McCullum fell attempting a big shot, caught by Chandimal at long-on off Herath after hitting one six and two fours in his 44-ball knock.

New Zealand made two changes from the side that played the last match as it brought in Ellis and debutant paceman Adam Milne in place of Kyle Mills and Jacob Oram.

The fifth and final one-day international will be played at the same venue on Monday.

Clarke named in one-day team of the year

Michael Clarke was the only Australian named in the ICC one-day team of the year, for which India's MS Dhoni was named as captain for the second consecutive year.

Clarke, who also made the ICC Test team of the year, scored 727 runs over the last 12 months in one-day internationals at an average of 42.76 including a hundred against Sri Lanka in March.

Shane Watson was selected as the 12th man despite missing a number of the Australian summer's one-day matches due to injury,

Dhoni, in the team for a fifth year in succession, was joined by compatriots Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir in the XI.

Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara and fast bowler Lasith Malinga made the side, as did Pakistan spinners Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi.

The world's number one one-day international side England is represented by captain Alastair Cook and paceman Steven Finn, with Morne Morkel the only selection from second-place South Africa.

"This team, along with the test team of the year was extremely difficult to decide upon, but we feel the side has strength to bat well down the order while also having a good variety for any type of conditions when it comes to its bowling attack," former West Indies captain and chairman of the ICC Awards selection panel Clive Lloyd said.

"With six countries represented and a vast expanse of talent the team would be a challenge to beat for any number of opposition sides."

The other awards will be announced at the ICC awards ceremony in Colombo on Sunday (AEST).

Smith and Johnson named in one-day squad

All-rounder Steve Smith and fast bowler Mitchell Johnson have been recalled to Australia's one-day squad for the tour of the British Isles in June and July.

Smith, 22, last played for Australia in a one-day international against South Africa at Port Elizabeth in October last year.

Smith has played 29 one-day matches for Australia, scoring 343 runs with the bat at an average of 22.86, and taken 22 wickets for 755 runs at an average of 34.31.

He scored 492 runs for NSW in the Sheffield Shield last season, plus 189 runs in five matches in domestic one-dayers. He also led NSW to victory in the Twenty20 Big Bash League.

National selector John Inverarity said Smith had been chosen for his late season form for NSW, saying the 22-year-old had been picked as a back-up all-rounder.

"I see Steve Smith primarily as a batsman but he needs to improve, I'm keen to see him improve his leg spin, he is electrifying in the field," Inverarity said.

"We need bowlers to bat but we need batsman who can bowl a bit - Steve and Mark Waugh gave so much to the side with their bowling."

Another picked to make a return to international cricket is Western Australian paceman Johnson, 30, who last played for Australia against South Africa in the Johannesburg Test last November.

Johnson injured his toe in the South African series, ruling him out of the Australian summer, but his return of only three wickets at a cost of 255 runs in the series had put his spot in doubt.

Inverarity said Johnson was a "fine bowler", who he had recently seen bowl in Perth.

Johnson is in contention for the Australian World Twenty20 squad to be named in August, and selectors believe he needs quality competitive cricket before then.

Inverarity said the one-day squad had been picked with the 2013 Ashes against England in mind.

Australia will only have one wicket-keeper for the British Isles tour in Victorian Matthew Wade, while Tasmanian Tim Paine - who is returning from injury - will put on the gloves for Australia A's tour of England in July and August.

Inverarity said New South Wales keeper Brad Haddin will have "all the time he needs" to return after personal issues forced him to withdraw from Australia's recent Test tour of the West Indies.

Dropped from the one-day squad were Queensland's Peter Forrest, New South Welshmen Mitchell Starc and Peter Nevill and South Australians Dan Christian and Nathan Lyon.

Forrest, Starc and Nevill will go on the Australia A tour.

Blues pair Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja have been left out of both squads. Inverarity said their performances during the summer were unsatisfactory but their form during the English county cricket competition will be monitored.

Smith, Johnson, George Bailey and Patrick Cummins have been named in both squads. Cummins has recovered from a heel injury.

Aussies drop Forrest for third one-day clash

Batsman Peter Forrest has been dropped as Australia turns to a two-man spin attack for the third one-day international against the West Indies in St Vincent on Wednesday (AEDT).

Forrest, who made a duck in the five-wicket defeat to the Windies in Sunday's second one-day international, has been axed in favour of spinner Nathan Lyon as the tourists seek their best options to reclaim the series lead on the slow Arnos Vale Ground pitch.

Lyon, who made his one-day international debut in the third final of the tri-series against Sri Lanka in Adelaide earlier this month, joins Xavier Doherty for a dual spin assault.

Since making his maiden one-day international century against Sri Lanka in Hobart last month, Forrest has struggled for form, only passing 20 once in his past five innings for Australia.

His axing means a reshuffle of Australia's batting order for Wednesday's game is likely, with Matthew Wade likely to move back to opener alongside David Warner while captain Shane Watson slots in at number three.

Veteran batsman Michael Hussey says Wednesday's game will be a vital one in the five-game series, with Australia desperate to take a 2-1 series lead going into the fourth and fifth games on the nearby island of St Lucia.

"Just to not think too much about it and get back out there is a good thing," Hussey said of the quick turnaround following Sunday's loss.

"Obviously we'd prefer to be two to the good but it's one-all and it's really a pivotal match in the series."

The match begins at 9.30am (12.30am Wednesday AEDT) with morning showers again forecast.

Tigers name Ponting in one-day final squad

Ricky Ponting has been named in a 13-man squad for Tasmania's one-day final against South Australia at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers are yet to decide who will make way for Ponting, who was dropped from Australia's one-day squad on Monday.

"Ricky Ponting's inclusion injects world-class qualities into our team and we know that he is very excited at the prospect of playing in this final for Tasmania," Tigers chairman of selectors Michael Farrell said.

"The Tigers will take good form into the match as well as plenty of big game experience.

"The team has shown a great ability to play well under pressure throughout the season and have prepared well for the final."

His inclusion means Tasmania could field four batsmen who have represented Australia in Ed Cowan, skipper George Bailey, Mark Cosgrove and the former international skipper.

With short-form specialist opener Jon Wells also in the side, Tasmania certainly has the firepower to deny South Australia an end to its 25-year wait for a one-day cup final victory.

In contrast, Saturday's final will be the Tigers' third in the past three seasons. They won the tournament in 2004/05, 2007/08 and 2009/10.

Tigers into one-day cup final

Tasmania powered into the domestic one-day cup final with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Queensland at Bellerive Oval.

Test opener Ed Cowan and rising star Jonathan Wells cracked centuries as the Tigers chased down a competitive Bulls total of 8 for 282 with 16 balls to spare, never giving the visitors a sniff of the bonus point victory they needed to make the decider.

Cowan and Wells put on 223, the fifth highest second wicket partnership in domestic one-day history as the Tigers completed the highest chase at Bellerive in the competition.

Tasmania will play in their fourth final in five seasons and are now a chance of hosting South Australia on February 25.

The Tigers moved to 26 points on the ladder, ahead of the 23 points of the Redbacks, who still to play Victoria in their last regular season match on Saturday.

Cowan and Wells paced the innings perfectly, ensuring the 226 needed to deny the Bulls the bonus point was in sight before hitting the accelerator in a bid for the home final.

The Tigers' chase did not begin well when Cosgrove was out LBW to Alister McDermott for one in just the third over.

Wells had lives on 7 and 45 when wicketkeeper Ben Dunk dropped him and missed a stumping on a poor night in the field for the visitors.

But he and Cowan put the Bulls out of business in the 38th over when a boundary from the Test opener took the home side to 1 for 228.

Cowan's 125 came off 107 balls with 13 fours and two sixes before he was run out, while Wells steered the side home with an unbeaten 121 from 145 balls.

Earlier, the Bulls rebounded from 2 for 16 with young gun Chris Lynn making 98 off 100 balls and an injured Nathan Reardon 67 off 68.

In-form Jackson Bird was the best of the Tigers' bowlers with an impressive 2 for 20 from seven overs.

Pakistan spins out Bangladesh in one-day whitewash

Pakistan's spinners revelled in helpful conditions to crush Bangladesh by 58 runs in the third and final one-day international on Tuesday to win the series 3-0.

The tourists, bowled out for a modest 177, hit back to dismiss Bangladesh for 119 on a wicket that turned and bounced at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium in the port city of Chittagong.

Shoaib Malik marked his 200th one-day appearance with 3 for 6 in four overs and fellow off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez picked up 3 for 27 as the Tigers were shot out in 38 overs.

It was Pakistan's 28th win in 29 one-dayers against Bangladesh, boosting the confidence of Misbah-ul-Haq's men ahead of the two-Test series starting on Friday.

The match was interrupted for 20 minutes in the second session when the floodlights went off, plunging the entire stadium in total darkness.

Bangladesh was sailing smoothly at 1 for 69 in the 20th over when five wickets crashed for 14 runs to allow Pakistan to bounce back in the match.

Bangladesh lost opener Tamim Iqbal off the first ball of the innings, bowled by Hafeez, before Shahriar Nafees and Mohammad Mahmudullah put on 69 for the second wicket.

The home team lost Nafees (25), skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (0) and Mahmudullah (35) in the space of three runs - all lbw to the spinners - to slide to 4 for 72 by the 22nd over.

Hafeez took a return catch of Shakib Al Hasan in his final over before Nasir Hossain, who scored a century in the last match, was caught off Abdur Rehman for 3.

Farhad Reza and Alok Kapali delayed the end with a seventh-wicket stand of 34, before Malik polished off the tail to complete his team's emphatic win.

Earlier, Bangladesh spinners Abdur Razzak and Mahmudullah shared six wickets to bowl Pakistan out cheaply.

Left-armer Razzak claimed 3 for 21 in 10 overs and off-spinner Mahmudullah grabbed three wickets in seven balls as Pakistan folded in 46.1 overs.

Umar Akmal top-scored with 57 and Misbah made 47, the pair adding 94 for the fourth wicket after Pakistan was reduced to 3 for 39 by the 12th over.

Pakistan made a shaky start, failing to score off the first 15 deliveries after Hafeez was caught in the covers from the fourth ball of the innings.

Misbah and Akmal stayed together till the 36th over to rebuild the innings before Razzak struck twice in his eighth over.

White dropped from one-day team

Dumped all-rounder Cameron White has described his omission from Australia's one-day squad for next month's Sri Lanka tour as a "kick in the guts".

On a mixed day for the Victorian, White was axed from the one-day team but retained as Australia's Twenty20 captain for the tour when the two squads were named on Wednesday.

The writing was on the wall for White when he was dropped from the team during the recent one-day series in Bangladesh following a barren run at the World Cup.

But it did not soften the blow on Wednesday.

"It is no secret I haven't been in the best of form of late but I was hopeful I would still be in the squad. It's definitely a kick in the guts," White said.

White exits the one-day squad along with Callum Ferguson as fellow batsmen Shaun Marsh and David Hussey return.

White hoped to break back into the one-day side but wondered when he would get the next chance to press his claims.

"I don't have a lot of cricket for a little while now," he said.

"Outside of a couple of T20 games I will be back playing for Victoria and scoring as many runs as I can.

"I just have to go back and get better and hopefully get another opportunity at some stage."

White did not consider himself a Twenty20 specialist.

"T20 is such a different game and moving towards having specialist players - (but) I am not saying I am in that boat," he said.

Australian Test and one-day skipper Michael Clarke backed White to break back into the 50-over game.

"It is a tough call because he is a wonderful player and has been a big part of the one-day team for a while now," said Clarke.

"I am very confident he will continue to work hard in the nets and keep putting the runs on the board whether it be for Victoria or in Twenty20.

"On the other hand it is great to see young Shaun Marsh and David Hussey back in the team."

White averaged just 17.5 in seven innings before being ousted by South Australia's Ferguson on the Bangladesh tour.

Marsh returns to the one-day side after missing the World Cup due to a hamstring injury while Hussey is back in both the 50-over game and Twenty20 sides after missing the Bangladesh tour due to the birth of his first child.

Young quick James Pattinson features in both squads while Xavier Doherty is the one-day spinner and Stephen O'Keefe is the Twenty20 tweaker.

Australia will play two Twenty20s, five one-day internationals and three Tests in Sri Lanka.

Twenty20 players fly out on July 30 and the remaining one-day squad members on August 5.

The Test squad will be announced later this month.
