Opposition says Oval project underfunded

Updated January 04, 2012 08:51:35

The South Australian Opposition says the Federal Government has short changed the Adelaide Oval upgrade.

Last week, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a $30 million contribution to the redevelopment to be spent on underground carparks.

That's $20 million less than was announced yesterday for an upgrade at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond says the SCG redevelopment is much smaller than Adelaide Oval's.

"The government in New South Wales, a Liberal government, has managed to get a much higher sum contributed by the Federal Government towards their new stadium and it's only to accommodate 3000 extra people," she said.

"This is a major project, this is the Prime Minister's home state, this is a Labor state government, one would expect that we would get at least a better showing than what we've got in terms of proportional funding for this project."

Despite criticising the funding, Ms Redmond says she remains opposed to the Adelaide Oval upgrade.

"In this state, I still say that there are better ways to spend $600 million than putting it into the Adelaide Oval."

In 2007, the Federal Government announced separate funding of $25 million for the Western Grandstand redevelopment, bringing its total contribution to the Adelaide Oval in recent years to $55 million.
