Southern Stars crush Kiwis

Updated January 21, 2012 19:00:03

Australia rolled New Zealand for just 69 at North Sydney Oval on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the five-game international women's Twenty20 series.

Defending 5 for 128 after being sent in by the White Ferns, Australia was simply far too good with the ball to claim a 59-run win.

Veteran Lisa Sthaleker was the star of the day, top-scoring with 52 off 32 deliveries as well as claiming three wickets with the ball.

Julie Hunter began the Kiwis' demise, starting with a wicket maiden off the first over of the New Zealand innings on her way to an opening spell of 2 for 4 from three overs.

Sarah Coyte and Erin Osborne chipped in with two wickets each.

Australia's innings was highlighted by Sthaleker's knock and a 49-run stand with vice-captain Alex Blackwell (20 off 27).

"A busy day for myself but it was set up by the partnerships I had with Alex and also with Julie Hunter right at the start of the bowling innings," Sthaleker told ABC Grandstand.

"Through that we were able to make some inroads in the Kiwi batting order."

New Zealand had few highlights but Rachel Candy's stunning one-handed catch off her own bowling to dismiss Leah Poulton (18) was a moment to remember for the tourists.

The series continues on Sunday with game three, also to be played at North Sydney Oval.
