Watson leads the way as Aussies thrash Proteas

Updated October 01, 2012 11:13:46

India crushed arch-rivals Pakistan and Australia put on another Shane Watson show as the race to the World Twenty20 semi-finals heated up on Monday (AEST).

Virat Kohli hit an unbeaten 78 off 61 balls as India, which would have been knocked out had it lost, bowled out Pakistan for 128 and then surpassed the modest target in 17 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Australia also defeated South Africa by the same margin in the first match of the double-header, after Watson claimed 2 for 29 and smashed 70 off 47 balls to win his fourth successive man-of-the match award.

Australia restricted the Proteas to 5 for 146 and won by the 18th over to record their second win in a row in group two, but will still need to beat Pakistan on Tuesday to make the semi-finals.

Australia leads the group with four points, India and Pakistan have two each, while South Africa has lost both matches so far.

India will also have to beat South Africa in Tuesday's second match to remain in the hunt.

Watson, the star player of the tournament so far, hit 10 boundaries including two sixes to cap another brilliant all-round display.

"It's nice to be able to continue playing well because I know how important my role is," Watson said.

"We are doing well but it's still hell of a long way to go in the tournament.

"Facing (Dale) Steyn and (Morne) Morkel was going to be a very big challenge. I knew if we got through the first four overs, the momentum would be with us for the rest of the innings."

South African captain AB de Villiers said he was frustrated by the second defeat after losing to Pakistan on Friday.

"We are very disappointed," he said.

"It is just so frustrating when we don't click. I just can't put my finger on one thing, because it went wrong everywhere.

"They did not allow us to get off to a flier and we lost quite a few wickets and that did not give us the momentum. Hopefully it is not all doom and gloom for us."

A sell-out crowd of 35,000 at the Premadasa stadium, including Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, also saw India continue its stranglehold on Pakistan in major world tournaments.

Pakistan has never beaten India in either the 50-over World Cup or the World Twenty20, in which the two rivals contested a thrilling final in 2007.

India lost Gautam Gambhir off the second ball of the innings, offering a tame return catch to 20-year-old left-arm spinner Raza Hasan, but Kohli and Virender Sehwag denied Pakistan another immediate break.

Kohli put on 74 for the second wicket with Sehwag and 54 for the unbroken third with cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh, who followed his two wickets and a run out in Pakistan's innings with 19 not out.

The impressive win was set up by the bowlers as seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji claimed three wickets and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took two to leave Pakistan in tatters after it elected to bat.

Shoaib Malik top-scored with 28, but only one other batsman managed to touch 20 in the face of steady bowling by the Indians.

"We did not think too far ahead," said Indian captain MS Dhoni.

"I always felt that if you are desperate for a win you put more pressure on yourself.

"But I was glad to see the players were relaxed and I knew that something good will come out of it."

Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez praised Kohli's match-winning innings on what he said was a difficult pitch to bat on.

"It was not easy to bat out there and we just did not get the partnerships," said Hafeez.

"Kohli was excellent. We were hoping to get him out and put pressure on the rest but we could not do that.

"We also need to improve our fielding but it is a relief that we still have a chance to qualify for the semis."

Wright's 99 helps England thrash Afghanistan

Updated September 22, 2012 08:01:51

Luke Wright's unbeaten 99 in 55 balls helped holders England crush Afghanistan by 116 runs in their Group A opener at the Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday (AEST).

England's victory means they will advance to the Super Eight stage along with group rivals India because both have defeated rank outsiders Afghanistan.

The defending champions amassed 5 for 196 after being put in to bat, Wright recording his highest Twenty20 score for his country after smashing six sixes and eight fours.

Left-arm paceman Shapoor Zadran bowled opener Craig Kieswetter for a duck but Wright, going in at number three, then shared a stand of 69 for the second wicket with Alex Hales (31).

The Sussex all-rounder also put on 72 for the third wicket with Eoin Morgan (27) as England collected 122 runs in the second half of their innings.

Wright narrowly missed out on his century when he could only manage two runs off the final ball.

"It is always a disappointment not to finish with a hundred," he said.

"I was just tired at the end and I was happy to keep the scoreboard going.

"The most important thing was a big total. I think the scoreboard pressure was important for our bowlers."

Afghanistan, in reply, were bowled out for 80 in 17.2 overs with only Gulbodin Naib (44) reaching double figures.

The Afghanis slumped to 8 for 26 after nine overs but Naib gave their total a respectable look.

Samit Patel, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann and Jade Dernbach all picked up two wickets for England.

Afghanistan, participating in their second successive Twenty20 World Cup, are now out of the tournament.

"We are very disappointed. The expectations were pretty high back home, everyone was following these games closely," Zadran said.

"Today was a tough day for us. We have learnt a lot and hopefully we can come up with some good results in the future."

Proteas thrash woeful Sri Lanka

Updated January 12, 2012 07:50:25

Hashim Amla hit a century before South Africa's opening bowlers sent Sri Lanka crashing as the host nation swept to a huge 258-run win in the first one-day international at Boland Park in Paarl.

Replying to a South African total of 8 for 301, Sri Lanka lost its first six wickets for 13 runs before being bowled out for 43, a record low total for the tourists.

Opening batsman Amla anchored the South African innings and made 112 off 128 balls.

He shared in partnerships of 144 for the second wicket with Jacques Kallis (72) and 91 for the third wicket with new captain AB de Villiers (52).

It was always likely to be a tough target for Sri Lanka to chase but its hopes were dashed almost immediately as it made a disastrous start with new-ball bowlers Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe both taking three wickets in their opening spells.

Morkel finished with 4 for 10 to take the man of the match award, while the left-armed Tsotsobe claimed 3 for 19.

Sri Lankan captain Tillekeratne Dilshan acknowledged that South Africa had produced "fantastic bowling" at the start of his team's innings.

"After that it was very difficult to come back," he said.

Dilshan took heart from Sri Lanka's comeback in the Test series when it won the second Test after losing the first by an innings.

"The same thing must happen again," he said.

De Villiers said it had been a "dream start" to his captaincy.

"It was a quality team performance," he said.

Morkel started the collapse when Upul Tharanga fell to a diving catch by JP Duminy at gully off the second ball of the innings without scoring.

Dilshan also went second-ball for a duck, caught behind off a ball from Tsotsobe which bounced and cut back at him.

Dinesh Chandimal, promoted to number four in the batting order, was bowled by Tsotsobe before Kumar Sangakkara edged a lifting delivery from Morkel.

Angelo Mathews lasted only two balls before fending another lifting delivery from Morkel to midwicket.

When Mahela Jayawardene was caught at point off Tsotsobe, Sri Lanka's innings was in tatters at 6 for 13.

Kosala Kulasekera showed some fight and made 19, the only Sri Lankan to reach double figures, before Morkel returned to the attack and he was caught at deep midwicket pulling a short ball.

Sri Lanka's previous lowest total was 55 against the West Indies in Sharjah in 1986/87.

Its collapse happened on the same ground where it dismissed Canada for a then world record low 36 during the 2003 World Cup.
