Samuels lifts West Indies to win over Bangladesh

Updated December 11, 2012 07:23:48

Explosive batting from Marlon Samuels lifted the World Twenty20 champions West Indies to an 18-run win over Bangladesh in a high-scoring match at Shere Bangla stadium on Tuesday morning.

Samuels hit a 43-ball 85 not out to steer the champions to 4 for 197 in their 20 overs.

While there was some blistering hitting from Bangladesh's openers, it only managed to reach 1 for 179 in reply.

Samuels's strong performance peaked at the end of the West Indies innings when he hit 29 runs in their final over, which included three sixes and a four.

He narrowly escaped being caught twice, with the catch missed both times by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim off paceman Ziaur Rahman.

Rubel Hossain was threatening at the outset as he dismissed Chris Gayle in the third over for 6 and then had Dwayne Smith (24) in his next.

Darren Bravo also batted impressively for the West Indies, hitting two sixes and five boundaries during his rapid 28-ball 41 before he was stumped by Rahim off Sohag Gazi.

Kieron Pollard (15) and Lendl Simmons (18 not out) added to Samuels's big score, as the tourists added 75 runs in the final five overs.

Bangladesh's openers were strong, with Tamim Iqbal hitting a 61-ball 88 and Mohammad Mahmudullah making 64.

But the West Indies' quality spin bowling proved too much for them, with Chris Gayle conceding just 18 runs in his four overs and Samuels conceding 32.

Bangladesh notched up 17 runs in each of the first and third overs. But following Anamul Haque's dismissal for a 12-ball 22, the West Indies' spinners managed to limit its score.

Iqbal hit 10 boundaries and two sixes during his knock while Mahmudullah notched up four sixes and three fours.

The defeat came after Bangladesh clinched the preceding five-match one-day series 3-2 on Saturday.

Haddin hundred lifts NSW against Tigers

Updated September 26, 2012 19:22:37

Brad Haddin broke a two-year century drought in first-class cricket to spearhead a New South Wales revival on day one of the Sheffield Shield cricket match against Tasmania at Bankstown Oval on Wednesday.

The Blues were 2 for 1 and 3 for 7, but two fifty-run partnerships and a 168-run sixth-wicket stand between Haddin (114) and Moises Henriques (83 not out) lifted them to 7 for 302 by stumps.

Australian representative Haddin's last first-class century was against England in Brisbane in November 2010 in the opening Test of the Ashes series.

He struggled for form in Australia last summer and returned from the Australian Test tour of the West Indies earlier this year after his young daughter Mia fell seriously ill.

Matthew Wade took over the wicketkeeping duties in the West Indies, but Haddin showed on Wednesday he still had plenty to offer.

In front of a surprisingly big crowd of 1207 including Australian selector Rod Marsh, Haddin displayed his trademark aggression.

He played numerous attractive, well-timed shots around the ground.

Haddin struck 14 fours and two sixes before miscuing a pull shot off Jackson Bird (3-59) to Luke Butterworth at mid-wicket.

In-form Henriques followed up scores of 78 in both the one and four-day fixtures against Western Australia with another fluent innings.

Michael Clarke (37) and Steve Smith (64) started the fightback with a partnership of 57 and Smith and Haddin added 60.

Former Bankstown junior Bird triggered the Blues early batting woes.

Bird had Peter Nevill (1) lbw with his first ball and then caught Scott Henry (0) in the slips off Luke Butterworth.

He then had Nic Maddinson (0) caught in the slips by Ricky Ponting, ending a fruitless 19-ball innings for the highly touted left-hander.

Bird, last season's Sheffield Shield rookie of the year, didn't concede a run until his 21st delivery.

Butterworth, Mark Cosgrove and Adam Maher each chipped in with a wicket.

Welegedara lifts Sri Lanka after Younis ton

Updated November 06, 2011 08:41:48

Paceman Chanaka Welegedara took two wickets with the second new ball, including that of centurion Younis Khan, to give Sri Lanka the edge in the third Test against Pakistan at Sharjah stadium on Sunday morning.

The 30-year-old left-arm paceman dismissed Younis (100) with the first delivery of the second new-ball and then had Asad Shafiq (16) in the same spell to leave Pakistan at 6 for 282 at the close on the third day.

Sri Lanka, who scored 413 in its first innings, still leads by 131 runs and is seeking a big first innings lead to give itself a chance of levelling the series after losing the second Test by nine wickets in Dubai.

The first Test in Abu Dhabi ended in a draw.

With just two overs to go left-arm spinner Rangana Herath removed Adnan Akmal lbw for 7 to leave Sri Lanka on top.

At the close, skipper Misbah-ul Haq, who reached his 13th half-century in the penultimate over, was unbeaten on 50 and Abdul Rehman was 3 not out.

The first two sessions had belonged to Pakistan as Younis added 98 for the third wicket with Azhar Ali (53) and another 100 with Misbah for the fourth wicket but Welegedara's double strike slumped Pakistan from 3 for 233 to 5 for 258.

Younis had completed his 18th Test hundred with a sharp single off Welegedara in the last over before tea, taking 188 balls which included eleven fours and a six.

Misbah was mostly blocking before hitting the 53rd delivery he faced for his first boundary, ensuring Pakistan did not lose sight of winning 2-0 if it wants to replace Sri Lanka at number five and jump one place up the current Test rankings.

After tea, both the batsmen upped the tempo as Younis hit a boundary and six off Herath to take Pakistan past the follow-on mark of 213, before notching another four off a reverse sweep as Sri Lanka delayed the second new ball until the 91st over.

The new ball was effective as Welegedara struck with the first delivery, bowling Younis with a sharp incoming delivery. Younis hit 12 boundaries and two sixes during his 211-ball knock.

Welegedara, who finished with 3 for 62 off 25 overs, then had Shafiq caught behind.

Sri Lankan bowling coach Champaka Ramanayake praised Welegedara's bowling.

Earlier in the morning, Sri Lanka was a bowler short after frontline paceman Dhammika Prasad injured a muscle and was unable to bowl after Pakistan resumed at 2 for 35.

That helped Ali, who scored his maiden hundred in the last match in Dubai, and Younis to bat out the first session taking Pakistan to 2 for 126 by lunch.

Younis, on 30, survived a close leg-before shout against Herath who extracted some spin out of an otherwise batting-friendly pitch.

Ali reached his 11th Test fifty soon after lunch but was bowled by medium pacer Kosala Kulasekara's delivery in the sixth over after lunch, for the debutant's first Test wicket.

Sharma lifts India before more rain

Updated July 1, 2011 09:23:00

Indian paceman Ishant Sharma mopped up the West Indies tail to capture his 100th Test wicket before the fickle weather threatened the chances of a result after a rain-interrupted third day of the second Test in Barbados.

Sharma bowled superbly on a lively Kensington Oval pitch that suited the quicks to finish with career-best figures of 6 for 55, including the last two wickets in successive balls to remain on a hat-trick.

The lanky paceman took the last three wickets to restrict West Indies to 190 and give India a narrow first innings lead of 11 runs before the foul weather brought play to an early halt.

The visitors, who have never won a Test in Barbados, extended their advantage to 34 runs by the close after reaching 23 without loss in their second innings.

Abhinav Mukund was unbeaten on 8 with Murali Vijay on 3 after their innings was delayed first by a tropical storm, then bad light as the umpires called an early end to proceedings.

West Indies' Marlon Samuels, who replaced sacked vice-captain Brendan Nash, repaid the selectors' faith by scoring an unbeaten 78, only to run out of partners.

He also shared a vital sixth wicket stand of 77 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, dismissed for 37 in the penultimate over of the morning session, after the home side slumped to 5 for 57 and were in danger of falling well short of the tourists' total.

Resuming on 5 for 98, Samuels and Chanderpaul adopted a cautious approach, eliminating any risky shots as they looked for a first innings lead after West Indies lost a tight first Test in Jamaica.

They reached their 50 partnership off a painstakingly slow 136 balls but were looking more and more comfortable at the crease when Chanderpaul suddenly dragged a short-pitched ball from Abhimanyu Mithun back on to his stumps with the total on 134.

West Indies went to lunch at 6 for 138 but lost their remaining four wickets before tea with captain Darren Sammy (15) and Ravi Rampaul and Fidel Edwards (both no score) all falling to Sharma.
