Pattinson packs punch for trailing Vics

James Pattinson showed plenty of aggression in a frightening spell of bowling as Victoria claimed five second-innings wickets to stay in the hunt after day two of its Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia.

Western Australia reached 5 for 76 at stumps on Friday, an overall lead of 105 on an MCG pitch offering assistance to the pace bowlers.

Tom Triffitt is 20 not out and Adam Voges is unbeaten on 8.

At Bellerive Oval, South Australia moved to 7 for 225 at stumps on day two against Tasmania, opening up a lead of 199 runs.

Travis Head, 18, scored 75 and together with a valuable 50 off 59 balls from Dan Christian, helped the Redbacks take command of the match.

Jackson Bird finished the day with 3 for 48 to lead the way for the Tigers.

Victoria had resumed on Friday on 0 for 21 in reply to the Warriors' 248 and the home side were dismissed for 219 at tea, including number 10 Clint McKay's 65.

McKay (2 for 20) followed up his career-best score by claiming the early wickets of debutant Sam Whiteman for a duck and Test batsman Mike Hussey for 3 in the Warriors' second innings.

Jayde Herrick removed opener Marcus Harris (29) caught at second slip with the score on 47 and two runs later Test quick Pattinson struck a double blow.

Marcus North (13) fended a rising delivery to third slip and Mitchell Marsh was bowled between bat and pad for a third-ball duck.

Pattinson finished the day with 2 for 19 from 10 overs in an encouraging performance ahead of next week's first Test against South Africa in Brisbane.

"I had a bit of trouble against Tassie (taking 0 for 89 and 2 for 24 last week) on a flatter wicket, but I always thought I was there or thereabouts," Pattinson said.

"I just found some rhythm in that last spell and felt pretty good.

"I've had a good preparation leading into the first Test and I'm just looking forward to, hopefully, getting these five wickets pretty early tomorrow morning.

"When you're in a rhythm like that you don't really think about speed, it just sort of happens.

"When I try and bowl fast it never really happens. It's funny, it just clicks.

"It felt like I was hitting Wadey's (wicketkeeper Matthew Wade's) gloves pretty hard."

Earlier, Western Australia's fifth-gamer Jason Behrendorff took a career-best 4 for 29.

The 22-year-old left-arm quick's victims included Victoria's top order of Chris Rogers (43), Peter Handscomb (13) and Cameron White (0).

McKay's 65 came off 51 balls and included six fours and two sixes, which were both off the bowling of spinner Michael Beer.

Pattinson (18) and fellow tailender McKay added 83 runs for the ninth wicket after the Bushrangers had been 8 for 135.

Victoria's other major partnership was the fourth-wicket stand of 71 between Rogers and Aaron Finch (34).

Pattinson steers Vics to Shield win

Career-best bowling figures by James Pattinson set up a remarkable 10-wicket Sheffield Shield win by Victoria over Queensland at the Gabba.

In what would warm the national selectors' hearts ahead of next month's first Test against South Africa at the same venue, Pattinson (6 for 32) was at one stage on a hat-trick as the Bulls lost 7 for 32 to be routed for 125 in their second dig late on day three.

Set just 48 for victory, the Bushrangers shot down the target in just 9.3 overs, with Rob Quiney not out 25 and Chris Rogers unbeaten on 21.

It was the unbeaten Bushrangers' second 10-wicket victory in as many Shield matches.

Pattinson - who had match figures of 8 for 61 - showed no mercy as the Bulls at one stage lost 5 for 9.

Remarkably it was Pattinson's first five-wicket haul in Shield cricket.

His only other bags of five were in Tests, both against New Zealand last summer.

And he continued his love affair with the Gabba - he picked up 5 for 24 against the Black Caps on Test debut at the venue last year.

He lodged a compelling case to line up alongside Bushrangers team-mate and mentor Peter Siddle in the opening Test against the Proteas.

The modest Pattinson refused to believe a Test berth is a mere formality but he did admit to enjoying bowling at the Gabba.

"It's a fantastic wicket for a fast bowler, it's fast and it offers a bit of seam movement as well," he told Grandstand.

"So it's a fantastic start here and I'm pretty lucky that the first Test is here if I'm selected ... so hopefully that can give me the confidence heading into that first Test that I can perform well for Australia."

Siddle is expected to chime into the Test pace attack with fellow hard-hosed quick Ben Hilfenhaus against the Proteas with selectors tipped to rotate young speedsters Pattinson, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc throughout the summer.

Siddle was nursed through the Shield clash, finishing with match figures of 4 for 57 off just 20 overs.

But he also did plenty of damage with the bat - he hit 54, his second-straight half century, in a 112-run seventh-wicket stand with Matthew Wade (89) that ensured the Bushrangers claimed first innings points.

Pattinson landed body blows by striking just before lunch and tea, but the Bulls still had no idea what hit them when the young quick ran amok after the home side emerged for day three's final session at 4 for 93.

Only three Bulls batsmen made double figures in the second innings - patient opener Wade Townsend (42), Joe Burns (30) and Peter Forrest (26).

Pattinson was ably supported by John Hastings (2 for 36).

Earlier on Friday, Wade was denied a century before the Bushrangers were bowled out for 227 in their first dig.

Siddle joined Wade at the crease with the Bushrangers battling at 6 for 68 late on day one in reply to the Bulls' first innings of 149.

They resumed on Friday at 6 for 174 after rain all but washed out day two.

Luke Feldman (3 for 66), Alister McDermott (3 for 45) and Ben Cutting (3 for 47) impressed with the ball for the Bulls.

Pattinson stars as Vics skittle WA

Test paceman James Pattinson made an impressive start to the new season by helping skittle Western Australia cheaply on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA ground.

Pattinson claimed four wickets to bowl his side into a powerful position in the match and vindicate Bushrangers captain Andrew McDonald's decision to bowl first on a green wicket.

The Warriors were dismissed for 175 before tea and the Bushrangers were 3 for 144 at stumps in reply, needing just another 32 runs to claim first innings points.

McDonald, who had faced just 46 balls, was unbeaten on 59 and Peter Handscomb was on 14.

Pattinson, 22, whose promising career has already been troubled by injuries that have restricted him to just five Tests, looked ready for a big summer when taking the new ball for the Bushrangers.

Bowling with good pace and plenty of menace, he struck with his very first ball of the new campaign, clean bowling opener Liam Davis for a golden duck.

Pattinson then claimed the crucial wicket of talented young all-rounder Mitchell Marsh (6) with the last ball before lunch.

He also removed the Warriors' last hope for a big score, veteran Adam Voges (39), on his way to 4 for 30 from 14 overs.

"I am pretty pleased with where I am considering I haven't had a lot of four-day bowling, although I have done a fair bit of one-day stuff," said

Pattinson, benefiting from a new gym program and a slightly leaner physique.

"Prior to the Australian camp in Darwin I was struggling a bit for rhythm, but it has just clicked over the last month and it seems to be going really well."

Pattinson says the Bushrangers have put themselves in a commanding position in the match.

"There was a bit of green grass on the wicket and we won a good toss to win.

"The bowlers backed it up well and the batters have set it up pretty well now."

Pattinson was well supported by fellow Test quick Peter Siddle, who also enjoyed the conditions and bowled better than his figures of 2 for 53 indicated.

The Warriors were always in trouble after losing Davis and beleaguered first drop Shaun Marsh early.

Their best partnership was just 35 runs, and only some late swinging from Nathan Rimmington and Michael Hogan added respectability to the score.

Marsh's woes continued when he survived a very confident appeal for a catch at short leg on four, but made just 10 more runs before being trapped LBW by John Hastings and he is just a shadow of the batsman that made a Test century on debut.

Wicketkeeper Tom Triffitt was the most impressive of the Warriors batsmen, making 42 from 57 balls.

The Warriors, beaten by visiting New South Wales in their season-opening Shield clash two weeks ago, fought back briefly with the ball to have the Bushrangers 3 for 82, before McDonald and Handscomb steadied the innings.

Aussie quick Pattinson almost fully fit

Australian fast bowler James Pattinson says his recovery from a back injury is progressing well and he is close to returning to full training.

The Victorian heads to Brisbane today to begin work at the AIS Centre of Excellence ahead of Australia's one-day tour of the British Isles beginning in late June.

Pattinson jarred his back in the second Test against the West Indies, but says he hopes to be back bowling at 100 per cent by the end of next week.

"I'm bowling about three times a week now at about 80 per cent intencity and building that up ... and hopefully (I'll have) three weeks of going 100 per cent in the nets before getting over to England," Pattinson said.

"I'm looking for a bit of match intensity (at the centre of excellence), so hopefully I can get out there in the middle.

"It'll mostly be white ball practice with the one-dayers coming up."

Pattinson is looking forward to resuming his fledgling partnership with fellow young gun Pat Cummins, who has also been named in the Australian squad to take on Ireland in a 50-over match and England in a series of one-dayers in June and July.

There is also an Australia A tour to follow in July and August, and Pattinson says he and Cummins will be looking to fine-tune their performances in English conditions, with a view to spearheading the Australian attack in next year's Ashes.

"It's an exciting time for Australian cricket at the moment with a lot of young guys coming through," he said.

"I don't think we've played in these conditions before so it'll be a great learning curve before the Ashes next year.

"Hopefully it gives us a bit of an edge over the Poms and we can go over to the Ashes with one up over them."

Pattinson, Siddle returning home

Australian fast bowlers James Pattinson and Peter Siddle were ordered to return home from West Indies because of back injuries.

Siddle departed the Caribbean before the end of the second Test in Port of Spain, having already been forced to miss the match with back soreness, while Pattinson will leave for Australia in the next 24 hours.

Pattinson injured his back when fielding on day three of the Test, which ended in a draw this morning.

"We have since monitored his (Pattinson) condition over the last couple of days and the initial investigations suggest that while the injury is not serious there is insufficient time for him to recover to play in the third Test match," Australia physiotherapist Kevin Sims said in a statement.

No replacement will be called up, leaving Australia with three pacemen - Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus and Mitchell Starc - available for the third Test starting next week in Dominica.

Pattinson out of series with foot injury

Australian tearaway James Pattinson has been ruled out for the remainder of the Test series against India with a foot injury.

The 21-year-old fast bowling revelation has been cleared of stress fractures but complained of pain in his left foot on the fourth day of the second Test, and needs to be rested.

Ryan Harris and Mitchell Starc have been included in the squad for the next Test in Perth and will compete for the vacant fast bowling position.

"James Pattinson has been omitted from the squad due to a foot injury and has been replaced in the XII by Mitchell Starc," national selector John Inverarity said in a statement.

"The intention of the National Selection Panel was to rest James from the Perth Test match as this young man has played in four Test matches over a period of just five weeks.

"This intention has become a necessity after post match scans have revealed James' foot injury.

Squad physio Alex Kountouris said Pattinson will be managed carefully over the next few weeks.

"James Pattinson reported some left foot pain after the second innings of the Sydney Test match," he said.

"Whilst he was able to bowl unrestricted in the game, he did have pain towards the end of the match.

"As such, he had x-rays and scans after the game that have cleared him of a stress fracture but have demonstrated early stage bone stress injury of the metatarsal bone of the left foot."

Australia squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Brad Haddin, Ed Cowan, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mike Hussey, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, David Warner.

Pattinson revels in Bellerive blitz

Star in the making James Pattinson took his second consecutive five-wicket haul as Australia set itself up for another crushing victory on day one of the second Test against New Zealand in Hobart.

Victorian quick Pattinson backed up his man-of-the-match debut at the Gabba with 5 for 51 as the Black Caps were skittled for 150 on a green-top Bellerive Oval deck of which Australian captain Michael Clarke had the fortune of handing his bowlers first use.

Only staunch resistance from Perth-born batsman Dean Brownlie (56) prevented the Black Caps from notching up the lowest ever Test total at the ground, 149 by the West Indies in 2005-06.

Australia was 1 for 12 in reply when rain brought an early close, another failure by Phil Hughes (4) the only blight on an otherwise stellar day.

Hughes was caught by Martin Guptill behind the wicket off the bowling of Martin for the third time this series.

His scores of 7, 3 and 4 tell the story and he will make way once either Shane Watson or Shaun Marsh are ready to come back into the side, with the Boxing Day Test against a far more competitive India looming large.

Pattinson will be on a hat-trick when New Zealand resumes its second innings, having already become the first Australian bowler since Rodney Hogg to take two five-wicket hauls in his first two Tests.

"I thought I could compete at this level at the start before I played but obviously it's just a bit of reassurance that I can compete at this level," Pattinson told Grandstand.

"Obviously there's a bit of assistance out there in the wicket for the bowlers, you love rocking up on day one and seeing it nice and green.

"We still bowled really well, we bowled in the right areas.

"Peter Siddle led that at the start there, bowled aggressive and showed really great emotion there so I sort of just worked on the back of his great work, hats off to him."

Pattinson said Australia had a plan and stuck to it.

"Length is the key (at Bellerive) - there's your two lengths, there's obviously your bouncer and then there's that fuller length to most of their batsmen who don't have a lot of footwork but they come at you quite hard.

"We had a plan of pitching the ball up and trying to get it to swing and we sort of did that plan really well."

However Pattinson said he was not getting ahead of himself heading into a four-Test series against tougher opposition.

"I know come the India Test with their batting line-up it's probably going to be a lot harder against them, they've got four of the best batsmen ever to play the game," he said.

"So I'm just looking forward to the second innings here and what comes after that, I'll take it when it comes."

A Brownlie boundary off Pattinson ensured the Kiwis avoided the record low, but he was gone next ball when he played on.

Batting bunny Chris Martin duly delivered Pattinson another five-wicket haul, comprehensively bowled for a golden duck to rack up his 32nd score of 0 in the Test arena.

Brendon McCullum fought bravely for over 90 minutes for his 16, his dismissal caught behind off Pattinson coming when New Zealand already had four batsmen back in the sheds.

Jesse Ryder (0) and Reece Young (0) were Pattinson's other scalps, Ryder deeming himself unlucky after having an lbw not out decision overturned on review.

Siddle (3 for 42) provided the perfect foil for Pattinson, taking the opening wicket with just the eighth delivery of the day when he had Martin Guptill caught behind for 3.

He also accounted for Kiwi captain Ross Taylor (6), who failed to overturn an lbw decision and duly exchanged words with the bowler as he exited the ground.

Taylor and the Black Caps suffered a terrible blow prior to play when influential all-rounder Daniel Vettori withdrew with a hamstring strain, his place going to debutant left-arm seamer Trent Boult.

Both Pattinson and Siddle bowled with supreme control and hit a perfect length for the most part, extracting every ounce of movement out of the pitch.

Mitchell Starc (2 for 30) on the other hand was inconsistent but still managed to snare two scalps, with Kane Williamson (19) caught behind and Tim Southee (18) chopping onto his stumps, both off wide deliveries.

Australia won the first Test in Brisbane by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Australia picked up another Test match win and uncovered another potential pace sensation en route to an easy nine-wicket victory over New Zealand on the fourth day at the Gabba.

The Aussies, spearheaded by a fantastic early-morning spell by debutant quick James Pattinson, skittled the Black Caps for 150 before knocking off the 19 runs required for victory before tea to go 1-0 up in the Chappell-Hadlee series.

David Warner capped off his first Test by hitting the winning runs but the day belonged to fellow new boy Pattinson, who ripped through the Kiwi top-order to pocket second innings figures of 5 for 27 and man-of-the-match honours.

The 21-year-old took three wickets with his first four balls, narrowly missing a hat-trick before becoming the third Aussie bowler in six Tests - joining Nathan Lyon and Patrick Cummins - to claim five wickets in an innings on debut.

"He was pretty good in the first innings, he got really good shape, but didn't get the rewards he wanted wicket wise," captain Michael Clarke, who helped set up the win with his 139 in Australia's first innings, told Grandstand.

"I'm pretty sure he was just a little nervous in his first match.

"But his execution and discipline in the second innings is what gives him the rewards that he thoroughly deserves."

Clarke, still yet to lose a series after taking over as skipper, said Pattinson's emergence was yet another example of Australian cricket's exciting future.

"I've said for a while, I think we have the stock. I think we have had for a while in first class cricket. It's just about giving these kids an opportunity with the guidance of some senior players around them," he added.

Resuming at 1 for 10, Pattinson single-handedly reduced the tourists to 5 for 28 with the wickets of Martin Guptill (12), Kane Williamson (0), Ross Taylor (0) and Doug Bracewell (2) in quick succession.

Pattinson almost followed in the footmarks of his new-ball partner Peter Siddle, who took a hat-trick in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba last year, and fellow Victorian Damien Fleming, who recorded a famous hat-trick on debut, only for his yorker to be kept out by Jesse Ryder.

Pattinson, playing just his 10th first class match, said his rise to prominence in the space of just a few overs has been a whirlwind experience.

"To actually get a game, to get picked, and do well in it is just a bonus," he said.

"I've been away with the team and been omitted a couple of times over in South Africa.

"So it's good to get that go and all that hard work has paid off for me."

Despite another match against New Zealand in Hobart next week, Pattinson is a near certainty to be part of Australia's attack to take on India at the MCG on Boxing Day.

His perfect line and length to the shaky New Zealand batsmen delivered him four catches behind the wicket and another at short leg from an accurate bouncer to Guptill.

All 10 of Australia's second-innings wickets came from catches. New Zealand dropped four catches in the match and Australia three.

Pattinson clearly outperformed fellow rookie Mitchell Starc and the more experienced Siddle, who both struggled for consistency over two innings, while Nathan Lyon helped clean up the New Zealand tail and finished with match figures of 7 for 88.

The out-of-sorts Phillip Hughes (7) was the only wicket to fall in Australia's short run chase, falling in familiar fashion as he slashed into the gully region off Chris Martin.

New Zealand captain Taylor said it was a tough loss to swallow and knows his team can perform better in the second Test at Bellerive Oval.

"The top six need to sell our wickets a lot dearer then we did out there," he said.

"We had a lot of soft dismissals, especially in the first innings.

"We need to have a good, hard look at ourselves after that performance.

"We came out here to bat out the day and lose three wickets in the second over of the day, it's pretty hard to get yourself back up from there."

Australia is still undefeated at the Gabba since 1988 - winning 17 of the last 23 matches against every Test side except South Africa, which will tour in 2012.
