Southern Stars clinch Rose Bowl series

Australia's women's cricket team sealed a 4-2 win in the Rose Bowl series with a 19-run victory over New Zealand in Brisbane on Thursday.

The Southern Stars took an unassailable lead in the trans-Tasman series following Tuesday's win, but were keen to ensure Shelley Nitschke's final game on home soil was a memorable one.

Nitschke, who will retire after the upcoming quadrangular series in England, claimed figures of 3 for 36 and was named player of the series.

Alex Blackwell (51) top scored in Australia's total of 222 while Nitschke and fellow spinner Lisa Sthalekar (3 for 28) helped limit New Zealand to 203.

Captain Jodie Fields was happy with her side's effort at Allan Border Field in the dead rubber.

"We came into today's match wanting to finish the series on a positive note and it's great that we've been able to achieve that, especially in Shelley's last game (at home)," Fields said.

"With the ball it was two of our most experienced players again leading from the front and it makes captaining easy with those sorts of players in the team."

The Southern Stars will leave for England on Thursday night ahead of their series against the hosts, New Zealand and India.

"It's been great to get out and play a couple of good games this week and we'll take some confidence and momentum with us to England for the quad series," Fields said.

"I know everyone is really looking forward to that opportunity and the challenge that lies ahead playing against three of the best sides in the world."

Australia's first fixture in England is a Twenty20 clash with India on June 23 in Billericay.
