No ton for Pietersen at Rose Bowl

Posted June 19, 2011 06:27:00

Kevin Pietersen missed out on his first Test century in Britain for nearly three years after helping England gain a first-innings lead in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka.

England was 4 for 195 in reply to Sri Lanka's 184, a lead of 11 runs, at stumps on the third day of the Rose Bowl's debut Test.

Pietersen exited for 85, eight minutes before the scheduled close, when he edged a drive to wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene to give medium-pacer Thisara Perera a first Test wicket.

The former captain, who has not made a Test century on home soil since reaching three figures against his native South Africa at The Oval in 2008, looked in fine touch while striking 14 fours in his 115-ball innings.

Pietersen had come in with England struggling at 2 for 14, following the early loss of captain Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott.

But together with in-form opener Alastair Cook (55) he put on 106 for the third wicket and then shared a stand of 71 for the fourth with Ian Bell.

At stumps, Bell was 39 not out and nightwatchman James Anderson was yet to get off the mark.

Earlier, Strauss was dismissed cheaply by Chanaka Welegedara for the third time in as many innings.

He managed just three runs before he opened the face against left-arm seamer Welegedara and gave a simple catch to Tharanga Paranavitana at first slip.

Strauss's exit came after he had twice been dismissed by Welegedara, falling lbw for four and nought, in the drawn second Test at Lord's.

But Cook - playing his 66th consecutive Test and so breaking the England record shared by Alan Knott and Ian Botham - drove Welegedara off the back foot for a superb boundary.

Suranga Lakmal though had Trott caught behind for just 4 after angling a ball across the right-hander from around the wicket.

Pietersen got off the mark third ball with a driven four off Lakmal.

And in the final session of a day where more than three hours' play was lost to rain, Pietersen was quickly into his stride with boundaries off Perera and Welegedara.

Cook went to his fifty with a single off seamer Dilhara Fernando, reaching his half-century in 92 balls with seven fours.

In the process the 26-year-old left-handed opener become the first England batsman in 48 years, and only the fourth in all, to score fifties in six successive Test innings.

Next delivery, Pietersen followed him to the landmark in just 56 balls including eight fours.

Cook's previous four Test innings had yielded three hundreds and a 96.

But when he drove confidently at Fernando, the type of shot that has been speeding to the boundary all season, the ball flew to Thilan Samaraweera, who held the gully catch at the second attempt.

Sri Lanka - 9 for 177 overnight - added just seven more runs, with Fernando scoring a Test-best 39 not out with fast bowler Chris Tremlett taking a Test-best six for 48.

England leads this series 1-0 after an innings and 14-run win in the first Test in Cardiff.

Victory at the Rose Bowel will see England go joint second in the ICC Test rankings alongside South Africa with only India, its next opponents, above them.

England uproot Sri Lanka top order

Posted June 17, 2011 10:06:00

Sri Lanka was reduced to 4 for 81 against England on a rain-marred first day of the third and final Test at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Only 38 overs out of a scheduled 90 were possible on the opening day of what was the first Test ever staged at the home of southern county Hampshire.

But that was enough time for England, 1-0 up in this series, to rip through a top order lacking Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan, out with a broken thumb suffered while making 193 in the drawn second Test at Lord's.

By contrast stand-in skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, the tourists' two most experienced batsmen, managed just six runs between them.

James Anderson marked his comeback to England duty by taking two wickets, while Chris Tremlett, who troubled Sri Lanka with his pace and bounce, also struck twice on the ground where he made his name.

Anderson ended the day with a return of 2 for 24 in 16 overs while Tremlett, who until his move to Surrey last season played for Hampshire, had 2 for 17 in just 11.

Sri Lanka was in dire straits at 4 for 39, with Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene both back in the pavilion.

But Thilan Samaraweera (24 not out) and Prasanna Jayawardene (10 not out) prevented further collapse with an unbroken stand of 42.

Anderson, who missed Lord's with a side injury, was recalled in place of Steven Finn as England looked to build on a series lead secured by an innings and 14-run victory in the first Test in Cardiff.

England, after captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and fielded, saw Anderson strike in the 13th over.

Test debutant Lahiru Thirimanne, in for Dilshan, edged to Strauss at first slip and fell for 10.

Sri Lanka spent more than an hour on 1 for 23 because of a rain break.

But five balls after the resumption, that became 2 for 23 when opener Tharanga Paranavitana was LBW on the back foot to a full length swinging delivery from Tremlett.

Sangakkara, the third left-hander in Sri Lanka's top three, is one of the world's leading batsmen, with an impressive Test average of more than 56 coming into this match.

Yet the gifted strokemaker, who resigned the captaincy after Sri Lanka's World Cup final defeat by India in Mumbai in April, has often struggled in England.

And on day one he only made 2 before, trying to drive an Anderson delivery that cut away off the pitch, he was caught behind by Matt Prior.

It took Sangakkara's tally for the series to a meagre 65 runs at an average of 13.

Another lengthy rain break followed before, in late evening sunshine, Tremlett produced a lifting delivery that Mahela Jayawardene could only edge to wicketkeeper Prior to leave Sri Lanka 4 for 39.

But Samaraweera gave Sri Lanka something to cheer with a stylish cover-driven four off Anderson.

Ponting backs Katich's criticism of selectors

Updated June 17, 2011 09:09:00

Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting says he was shocked by Cricket Australia's decision to sack Simon Katich from the national team.

Katich has described Cricket Australia's decision not to renew his contract for 2011-2012 as "absolutely ridiculous" and says its selection policy is "inconsistent".

Ponting says Katich is entitled to feel aggrieved with his axing from its list of 25 contracted players and has told Channel Nine his criticism is justified.

"To be omitted from the contract list was obviously a great shock to him. It was a shock to me, and his performances in the last two or three years has been as good as anybody's and almost as good as anybody's in the world," he said.

"So I'm surprised not to see him around, but it means a young guy gets a go and hopefully that guy can stand up and do the job for us."

"It's fair to say [Katich] didn't hold back in his press conference and rightly so as well," Ponting said on the AFL Footy Show last night.

Asked if he meant his comments to be a criticism of the selectors, Ponting added: "You can make of that whatever you like. I would have liked to have another old bloke around the group with me, yeah," Ponting said.

Ponting and Mike Hussey, both 36, have been retained and Ponting will play as a batsman only in the Test and one-day sides after giving up the captaincy.

Michael Clarke will lead Australia on a Test tour of Sri Lanka in August, with 22-year-old Phil Hughes tipped to win a recall at the top of the order to partner Shane Watson.

"It puts us 36-year-olds on notice now, Mike Hussey and myself. It's going to make us work that little bit harder," Ponting said.

Southern Stars clinch Rose Bowl series

Posted June 16, 2011 18:15:00

Australia's women's cricket team sealed a 4-2 win in the Rose Bowl series with a 19-run victory over New Zealand in Brisbane on Thursday.

The Southern Stars took an unassailable lead in the trans-Tasman series following Tuesday's win, but were keen to ensure Shelley Nitschke's final game on home soil was a memorable one.

Nitschke, who will retire after the upcoming quadrangular series in England, claimed figures of 3 for 36 and was named player of the series.

Alex Blackwell (51) top scored in Australia's total of 222 while Nitschke and fellow spinner Lisa Sthalekar (3 for 28) helped limit New Zealand to 203.

Captain Jodie Fields was happy with her side's effort at Allan Border Field in the dead rubber.

"We came into today's match wanting to finish the series on a positive note and it's great that we've been able to achieve that, especially in Shelley's last game (at home)," Fields said.

"With the ball it was two of our most experienced players again leading from the front and it makes captaining easy with those sorts of players in the team."

The Southern Stars will leave for England on Thursday night ahead of their series against the hosts, New Zealand and India.

"It's been great to get out and play a couple of good games this week and we'll take some confidence and momentum with us to England for the quad series," Fields said.

"I know everyone is really looking forward to that opportunity and the challenge that lies ahead playing against three of the best sides in the world."

Australia's first fixture in England is a Twenty20 clash with India on June 23 in Billericay.

India upstaged by Bravo

Posted June 17, 2011 10:32:00

World champions India was trumped by half-centuries from Darren Bravo and Ramnaresh Sarwan that guided West Indies to a second consolation victory in the final one-day International in Kingston.

The Indian bowlers conceded 96 inside the last 10.4 overs, as West Indies, in pursuit of 252 for victory, hit the jackpot with 14 balls remaining.

India appeared to be in control of the match, despite a career-best 86 from Darren Bravo and 75 retired hurt from Ramnaresh Sarwan.

But the tourists failed to maintain the pressure in the closing overs, and Kieron Pollard formalised the result, when he dragged a delivery from Ishant Sharma through mid-on for four.

India won the five-match series 3-2, having won the first three one-day internationals.

It had failed to build on 94 from Virat Kohli and 57 from Rohit Sharma, and was dismissed for 251 in 47.3 overs.

Kohli struck 10 boundaries from 104 balls, and Sharma hit two fours and one six from 72 deliveries in a 110-run stand for the second wicket, propping up the Indians after they were sent in to bat on a hard, bouncy Sabina Park pitch, and stumbled to 3 for 79 in the 17th over.

"It was a disappointing end to the series for us," said India captain Suresh Raina.

"But they played really well in the last two matches.

"Now that we have formally won the series, I still think it is important for us to enjoy the moment, and much credit must go to our bowlers, especially Amit Mishra, so I am really happy for the boys."

When Kohli was run out in the 36th over, failing to beat Ramnaresh Sarwan's throw to wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr going for a second run, the visitors batting collapsed under mean, purposeful West Indies bowling.

The world champions lost their last seven wickets for 62 in the space of 70 deliveries, as Andre Russell, playing an international match for West Indies on home soil for the first time, captured 4 for 35 from 8.3 overs that later earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Yusuf Pathan threatened to turn the tide for India, but Russell had him caught behind for 30 in the 46th over at the height of the carnage.

Kieron Pollard took 2 for 39 from eight overs, and Kemar Roach 2 for 52 from his allotment of 10 overs to support Russell in the demolition of the Indian batting.

India restricted West Indies to 2 for 53 in the 16th over, when Sarwan joined Bravo at the crease.

The Indians failed to make further headway, when they got a bit of fortune, Sarwan forced to retire hurt with severe cramps after the 38th over.

The visitors however, could not seize the moment, as Bravo took charge, hitting Mishra for a pair of sixes in his penultimate over, galloping West Indies to their target.

The short, stocky leg-spinner got his revenge, when he had the left-hander stumped in the 46th over, leaving Pollard and Samuels to take West Indies over the finish line.

The two sides now meet in the first of three Tests, starting on Monday at the same venue.

Katich hits out over 'ridiculous' axing

Updated June 10, 2011 12:56:00

Dumped Australian opener Simon Katich has hit out over his omission from Cricket Australia's list of contracted players, labelling it 'absolutely ridiculous'.

The 35-year-old, one of Australia's most consistent performers over past seasons, was told by chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch on Tuesday that he had been axed so the Test team could focus on bedding down a new opening partnership.

A fuming Katich, who averages 45.03 from 56 Tests, said he was "disappointed and frustrated" by what he felt were "inconsistent selection policies" coming out of Cricket Australia.

"I also want to make it clear that I know I'm not the only player that's gone through this in the last couple of years due to inconsistent selection policies," he told a press conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"I just hope that something good comes out of this situation, because I actually think the decision that came on Tuesday was absolutely ridiculous."

Katich had no doubt his age was a determining factor.

"I've got a massive feeling that my age played a big part in it," he said.

"Look, obviously that's never going to be mentioned because of the legalities of it all.

"But I know that in my last three seasons I've got the numbers on the board, I've enjoyed playing in the team, and to be told that it was because the opening partnership needed to be bedded down before the 2013 Ashes just doesn't sit well with me."

Katich said inconsistency and indecision was a concerning trend in Cricket Australia selection policy.

"The facts are, a week or two before the Ashes, a squad of 17 was named," he said.

"Now in my opinion, if you can't know what your best XI is a week or so before our biggest Test series that we play in, the Ashes, then that to me reeks of indecision.

"The fact that we've had 10 or 11 different spinners in the last two years or three years or whatever it's been - obviously some have been through retirements and injury and stuff like that - but that to me is another indicator of the inconsistency in selections.

"There's been rules for some and rules for others."

Katich confirmed he had pondered retirement but opted to play on for New South Wales out of respect for his team-mates, and said he had not completely ruled out a return to the international arena.

The gritty left-hander had formed a successful opening partnership with Shane Watson, but an Achilles tendon injury suffered during the second Adelaide Test against England forced him to miss the remainder of the Ashes series, won 3-1 by the tourists.

"To be given the reason that it's because the opening partnership needs to be down for 2013, when I know for a fact that Watto and I have thoroughly enjoyed opening together and it's been one of the bright spots in our team the last two years - I find it very hard to believe that," Katich said.

"The system at the moment - it's not only just affecting me - but it's also affected a number of players.

"I'm just one of a number of players in Australian cricket over the last number of years that has had to go through this process."

Katich said he had given his opinion on a review into Australian cricket which was opened following the Ashes debacle, but was not allowed to reveal specific details.

But he left no doubt as to his current thoughts on Cricket Australia.

"I know how they operate and I could see it coming," he said.

"I've only had a four-minute conversation with Andrew Hilditch on Tuesday and I haven't heard from anyone else at Cricket Australia since, and I've been involved with the organisation since 1999."

Door opened for Big Bash recruiting

Posted June 7, 2011 14:56:00

The eight new teams competing in this summer's revamped domestic Twenty20 competition can begin recruiting players.

Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) have released their memorandum of understanding for the next 12 months.

The agreement allows CA to finalise its list of 25 international contracted players and also opens the door for the Big Bash League franchises to compile their playing lists.

Under the MOU, players will be able to sign two separate contracts - one for their state teams and another for whichever Big Bash team they decide to join.

Players have also retained their 26 per cent share in Australian cricketing revenue while the Big Bash teams will be allowed to sign two overseas players in their squad of 18.

The implementation of the new-look Twenty20 competition means the number of state and rookie contracts on offer have been reduced, with each state association now only needing squads for the domestic one-day and Sheffield Shield tournaments.

Dilshan injury casts shadow over Sri Lanka

Posted June 8, 2011 06:47:00

No sooner had Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan been named man-of-the-match in the drawn second Test against England at Lord's overnight, he was doubting his prospects of playing in the series climax.

Opening batsman Dilshan made 193 in Sri Lanka's first innings but was twice hit on the right thumb by fast bowler Chris Tremlett, causing a hairline fracture which has left a huge question mark over his availability for the third and final Test at the Rose Bowl starting on June 16.

"It is a small fracture," said Dilshan, off the field for the final two days at Lord's, where Sri Lanka restored some pride after going 1-0 down during an innings and 14-run first Test defeat in Cardiff.

"I will have to wait for 10-15 days and I shall see how it goes before the next Test match," Dilshan also told Sky Sports.

"I feel I will miss the last Test but I'll see how it goes in the next couple of days," said Dilshan who'll be replaced as captain by former skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who deputised at Lord's, if he is unfit for the Rose Bowl.

Dilshan, whose innings surpassed Sidath Wettimuny's 190 in 1984 as the best by a Sri Lankan in a Test at Lord's, was pleased by his side's increased resilience following their Cardiff collapse.

"Overall I am happy. It was all-round a very good performance after the Cardiff match," he said.

England captain Andrew Strauss set Sri Lanka a target of 343 to win in 58 overs after declaring the hosts second innings on 7 for 335.

That England total featured 106 from Alastair Cook - the opener's third century in four Test innings - and Kevin Pietersen's 72.

But, unlike Cardiff, Sri Lanka had few problems in closing out a draw.

"We thought we had a chance if we took early wickets," said Strauss.

"We knew the wicket on the fifth day at Lord's would be flat so we needed something special to happen," he added.

Cook's innings continued a remarkable sequence with his first innings 96 in this match the only time in the Essex left-hander's last four Test knocks he has failed to reach three figures.

Now the 26-year-old is just four hundreds away from equalling the England record of 22 Test centuries shared by Walter Hammond, Colin Cowdrey and Geoffrey Boycott.

"My form's nice, but that form's not going to last forever so you've go to make the most of it while it does," said Cook.

However, Cook left himself open to some criticism by taking 137 balls for his second fifty when England was in search of quick runs.

"When we went out there today we were only 140 runs ahead, so if you lose a couple of wickets it's not a great position," Cook explained.

"It was about getting through that first hour and then building a partnership with Kev.

"We actually scored at four an over in that session - obviously I didn't do much of that scoring but you have to give credit to how Sri Lanka bowled."

Jayasuriya quits international arena

Updated June 10, 2011 10:37:00

Sri Lanka's opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya will retire from all forms of international cricket after the first one-day match of their England tour later this month, he said.

The 41-year-old all-rounder, who quit Test cricket in 2007, made the announcement after Sri Lanka Cricket recalled him for the T20 and one-day squads to face England.

"I called you here to inform (you of) my retirement from all forms of (international) cricket after 20 years of play," Jayasuriya said in Colombo.

"I'll retire after playing a one-day and a T20 game."

Sri Lanka faces England in a Twenty20 match on June 25 before the first one-dayer at the Oval three days later.

"I will continue to play league matches and domestic cricket," he said when asked if he would quit all form of cricket.

Jayasuriya, who helped Sri Lanka to its only World Cup triumph in 1996, remains the island nation's highest run-scorer in one-day internationals with 13,428 runs from 444 matches.

He is the second-highest scorer and the ninth highest wicket-taker in the limited-overs game.

He has scored 6,973 runs in 110 Test matches and captured 98 wickets.

He was left out of Sri Lanka's World Cup team early this year due to poor performance.

Jayasuriya was elected as a member of parliament last year for Sri Lanka's ruling party.

"I will serve people in my electorate in future and also I will work for the betterment of cricket," he said.

Hobart names T20 coach

Updated June 09, 2011 17:34:47

Highly-rated bowling mentor Ali de Winter has been appointed coach of the Hobart Hurricanes Big Bash franchise.

The 43-year-old former Tasmania all-rounder has been in charge of the Tigers' all-conquering pace bowling quartet since 2007.

He was widely seen as a key contributor as the Tigers won only their second Sheffield Shield last season.

Before returning to Tasmania, de Winter was a zone coaching manager in Western Australia and headed up the national cricket academy in Bangladesh.

He was also short-listed for the role of Australian bowling coach last month, but was overlooked in favour of former Test quick Craig McDermott.

The Hurricanes are one of eight franchises to compete in the revised Twenty20 domestic league in the upcoming summer, flying under a separate banner to the Tigers.

De Winter says the new competition could potentially reinvigorate the sport in Australia.

"This Big Bash League concept is extremely exciting and cricket is opening up to everyone - bringing the game to all walks of life and age groups including families, children, women and those from traditionally non-cricket backgrounds," he said.

"I think once the team lists have been named around the country the rivalry will start and this league will really gain some momentum before the battles begin."

Katich axed from CA contract list

Updated June 7, 2011 17:19:00

Simon Katich's Test career appears over after he was left out of Cricket Australia's contracted players' list for the 2011-12 season.

The 56-Test opening batsman and Marcus North were the notable omissions from the 25-player list, released by Cricket Australia.

The newcomers offered a central contract were Patrick Cummins, Xavier Doherty, John Hastings, David Hussey, Usman Khawaja, Jason Krejza and James Pattinson.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said his panel felt it was opportune to initiate a new opening partnership in time for the next Ashes series against England in two years' time and there was now no room for 35-year-old Katich.

"Simon has been a fantastic player for Australia and a key and successful member of the Test team in recent years," Hilditch said.

"However, amongst other matters, the selectors' panel felt it was the right time now to start blooding our next opening partnership in preparation for the Ashes.

"The opening partnership is critical to the success of any team and takes time to develop the necessary experience at international level.

"We feel it is important this change is made now as we prepare for the challenges ahead."

Katich's demotion offers another chance for Phillip Hughes, 22, to open the Australian innings along with Shane Watson.

Young pacemen, Victoria's Pattinson, 21, and Cummins, 18, of New South Wales, were given their chance to regenerate Australia's fast bowling attack by gaining contracts.

"James has tasted international cricket and we see him as a young man of immense talent who is made of the right stuff to succeed at the higher level," Hilditch said.

"Patrick is an exceptional talent who has impressed with his opportunities to date for NSW and it will be very exciting to watch his progress."

Senior batsman Ricky Ponting, 36, and Mike Hussey, 36, retained their contracts with Hilditch saying he envisioned them mentoring the younger players coming through.

Spinners Doherty and Krezja were added to the contract list along with off spinner Nathan Hauritz and leg spinner Steven Smith.

Batsman Khawaja, 24, who made his Test debut in last summer's failed home Ashes series, also received his first full contract.

"We see him as a very important player for the future of Australian cricket," Hilditch said.

Others not to have their contracts renewed for next season were James Hopes, Andrew McDonald, Clint McKay, Shaun Tait and Adam Voges.

"The next 12 months is a very important period in Australian cricket," Hilditch said.

"It will undoubtedly be a tough and demanding period as we play three of the worldG??s top four Test nations during away series against Sri Lanka and South Africa and home series against New Zealand and India.

"However we see it as a very exciting opportunity to commence regaining Australia's leading position in world cricket."

Contract list: Doug Bollinger (NSW, 29), Michael Clarke (NSW, 30), Patrick Cummins (NSW, 18), Xavier Doherty (TAS, 28), Callum Ferguson (SA, 26), Brad Haddin (NSW, 33), Ryan Harris (QLD, 31), John Hastings (VIC, 25), Nathan Hauritz (NSW, 29), Ben Hilfenhaus (TAS, 28), Phillip Hughes (NSW, 22), David Hussey (VIC, 33), Michael Hussey (WA, 36), Mitchell Johnson (WA, 29), Usman Khawaja (NSW, 24), Jason Krejza (TAS, 28), Brett Lee (NSW, 34), Shaun Marsh (WA, 27), Tim Paine (TAS, 26), James Pattinson (VIC, 21), Ricky Ponting (TAS, 36), Peter Siddle (VIC, 26), Steven Smith (NSW, 22), Shane Watson (NSW, 29), Cameron White (VIC, 27)

Reporter: Peter Wilkins

This month, 20-year old Ellyse Perry will become the first Australian to play in the World Cup for two different sports. She spoke with the ABC's Peter Wilkins about her unique achievement.

LEIGH SALES, PRESENTER: Most sports people dream of playing in one world cup in their chosen sport, but 20-year-old Ellyse Perry's about to achieve the unique distinction of playing in two world cups in two different sports. At 16, she was the youngest-ever cricketer, man or woman, to play for Australia, and now she's part of the 21-member Matildas soccer squad named today. Here's Peter Wilkins.

PETER WILKINS, REPORTER: Quintessential all-rounder Ellyse Perry juggles a university education with the demands of playing two sports at the elite level.

ELLYSE PERRY, ATHLETE: It's been the way for me to play cricket and soccer, and I started playing at the same age.

PETER WILKINS: She's also grappling with the tentacles of the entertainment industry.

RICHARD MCINNES, AUST. WOMEN'S CRICKET COACH: The thing with Elyse is she has an unbelievable worth ethic. She has the understanding of what it takes to be successful that is usually matched with someone in their late 20s, early 30s that are starting to hit the peak of their powers.

PETER WILKINS: Ellyse Perry became the youngest male or female to represent Australia at cricket. She was just 16.

Football internationals followed soon after.

Mum Kathy and coaching dad Mark - who prefer to stay in the background - nurtured their daughter's interests without a hint of pressure.

ELLYSE PERRY: My parents have been so supportive and I had a dad who was pretty much my own personal coach from the day dot because he loved sport and he's got a incredible knowledge of it.

PETER WILKINS: The Perry work ethic has allowed Ellyse to continue in both sports with lofty ambitions.

ELLYSE PERRY: For me it sort of always been about hopefully being someone that sticks around for a long time, and I guess in a way makes a bit of an impact or a mark on the sport and not just be someone that was there for a coupla years and then dropped off or moved on.

PETER WILKINS: To that end, there are willing allies in cricket and football administration.

RICHARD MCINNES: They're both better off if she's playing 80 per cent of either of our sports rather than 100 per cent of one and none of the other.

PETER WILKINS: As a cricketer, Ellyse Perry is near the top. She's played with the men and starred in Australia's World Cup 2020 win over New Zealand.

RICHARD MCINNES: Looking at her technique - there's no such thing as a perfect bowling technique, but her's is as close to perfect I've seen, I think, in either male or female.

PETER WILKINS: With more opportunities, the 20-year-old's batting could blossom.

RICHARD MCINNES: Long term she'll probably bat in the top order somewhere, maybe four or five.

PETER WILKINS: But the current focus is football and in a history-making achievement, Perry will be the first Australian to represent at senior world cups in both cricket and football.

TOM SERMANNI, MATILDAS COACH: For someone to achieve two world cups at the elite level in two sports is just a wonderful achievement.

ELLYSE PERRY: Maybe it hasn't quite sunk in.

PETER WILKINS: Modest to the core, the achievement is downplayed.

ELLYSE PERRY: I don't see it as being anything that special compared to the achievements of some our our most fantastic athletes.

PETER WILKINS: To date, this free-running fullback who scored a pile driver in the 2008 Asian Cup, has played 13 times for the Matildas, but she missed last year's Asian Cup win when cricket called. The boots on the other foot this time with football taking precedence. But he jury's out on whether Ellyse Perry is compromising her quest to have a lasting impact in both sports by not specialising in one.

TOM SERMANNI: She still always managed to touch - keep touch with the other sport. So she hasn't completely given up football for that period of time or given up cricket for a particular period of time. So I don't know if, you know, as I say, if she shunned one aside it would make her better at the other.

ELLYSE PERRY: If I was to not play one, I think I'd feel really lost just playing the other.

PETER WILKINS: Come on, when you wake up in the middle of the night, what is it? Is it football, cricket?

ELLYSE PERRY: I feel terrible because I just perennially sit on the fence and I just don't have a favourite and I think I might not enjoy it as much if I was just playing one sport and purely concentrating on that.

PETER WILKINS: After a landmark 2007 World Cup for the Matildas when they made the quarter-finals, the 21-strong squad heads to Germany with controlled expectation.

TOM SERMANNI: I think we're closer to the prize in essence that we've got our systems in place a lot better than we did going into the last World Cup. Therefore the talent pool coming through is better.

PETER WILKINS: Part of that pool is precociously talented 16-year-old Wollongong schoolgirl Caitlin Foord who might learn a trick or two from the virtual wolf in sheep's clothing in Ellyse Perry, the ultra-competitor.

TOM SERMANNI: She does it with that angelic smile, right enough, which can lull you into a false sense of security.

RICHARD MCINNES: I think she's a great advertisement for girls around the country that play multiple sports to say, "Well hang on: I can actually continue to do that to the highest level." They don't have to make a choice.

ELLYSE PERRY: Yeah, don't be afraid to have a go at anything, and especially I guess, speaking from a girl's perspective, just because the boys are playing doesn't mean you can't play.

Not only the physical, but the mental and the social benefits that I've received from sport I think can be offered to anyone, and particularly young girls, and, yeah, it's a really fantastic thing. So I'd love to see more girls being involved in sport and enjoying it.

LEIGH SALES: Wow! What an amazing girl! Peter Wilkins reporting.

Cricket Image Gallery Provides An Insight To Some Lighter Moments

Sutherland plays straight bat on Katich

Updated June 10, 2011 17:58:00

Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland has deflected criticism over dumped opener Simon Katich's omission from the list of Australian contracted players.

Katich hit out on Friday morning, labelling his axing from the Test team as "absolutely ridiculous" and criticising the National Selection Panel's policies as "inconsistent".

But Sutherland defended the NSP's moves and said he would not stand for any criticism of the integrity of the selection process.

"It's true that in a selection sense, everyone is entitled to their opinions about selection," he said.

"But ultimately the opinions that really count are [those of] the National Selection Panel and I reject any criticism of them in terms of their individual integrity, their collective integrity and the integrity of the process they go through in making decisions about who the best team is, the best players are, the best squad is, for Australian cricket into the future."

The Cricket Australia boss also moved to reassure that there has not been any other criticism from players about how contracts are handed out.

"I don't think there's discontent in regards to the selection process," he said.

"One thing that I do know is that there is a review underway at the moment, the team performance review chaired by Don Argus, and certainly Simon together with a number of other players have had the opportunity to present to the panel and speak on their views.

"It's premature to talk about views or findings out of that review but Simon certainly expressed his views as have other players, as have other people connected with Australian cricket and the Australian cricket team and in due course findings will be made public."

A fuming Katich, who averages 45.03 from 56 Tests, said he was "disappointed and frustrated" by what he felt were "inconsistent selection policies" coming out of Cricket Australia.

"I also want to make it clear that I know I'm not the only player that's gone through this in the last couple of years due to inconsistent selection policies," Katich told a press conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"I just hope that something good comes out of this situation, because I actually think the decision that came on Tuesday was absolutely ridiculous."

But Sutherland held no grudges, saying the 35-year-old is an asset to the sport.

"I spoke to this earlier on in the week and the comments I made at that time stand - Simon Katich is a fantastic player, he still is a fantastic player, he still has a lot to offer Australian cricket," he said.

"He's highly respected here and around the world and I would anticipate that he still has a huge amount to offer Australian cricket both as a player and down the track in other capacities as well.

"I can understand he's extremely disappointed at the news he's received this week and I really do sympathise with him on that basis."

Sutherland refused to be drawn on whether Katich would have a "black line through his name" for future roles.

"It's not for me to comment on that; as I say I think that Simon's a fantastic player, he's still got a lot to offer Australian cricket in whatever capacity," he said.

"It's really up to him.

"I think it's fantastic news that he's continuing on as a player for New South Wales and I'm sure that he has, knowing him, he has the grit in his teeth to ensure that he sends a very strong message to selectors and I'm sure the door's not entirely closed on him."

Cook sets up victory shot against Sri Lanka

Posted June 7, 2011 06:08:00

England gave itself a chance to win its Test series against Sri Lanka with a match to spare after losing skipper Andrew Strauss for a duck at Lord's here on Monday.

The hosts, at stumps on the fourth day of the second Test, were 2 for 149 in their second innings - a lead of 156 - with Alastair Cook 61 not out.

Cook, under skies brightened by the Lord's floodlights, helped England recover from 1 for 0 after the exit of Strauss and together with Jonathan Trott (58) put on 117 for the second wicket.

Kevin Pietersen, despite coming in when Rangana Herath was on - left-arm spinners, including Herath, have removed him 19 times in Tests - was unbeaten on 15.

England had dismissed Sri Lanka for just 82 inside 25 overs to force an improbable innings and 14-run win in the similarly rain-interrupted first Test in Cardiff.

But England still has 98 overs left on Tuesday's final day in which to achieve a win that would put them 2-0 up in this three-match series.

And the time remaining means a Sri Lanka victory cannot be ruled out completely either.

Sri Lanka, after rain washed out all of Monday's morning session, made 479 in reply to England's first innings 486 - a deficit of just seven runs.

Strauss was then plumb lbw to left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara off the second ball of the innings, the skipper wasting a review before walking back to the Pavilion.

The in-form Trott, sometimes criticised for slow-scoring, prospered against an under-powered Sri Lanka seam attack to score a 66-ball fifty, completed when he punched Dilhara Fernando through the covers for his eighth four.

Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara, captaining the side as Tillakaratne Dilshan was off the field following the finger injury he had suffered making a Sri Lankan Lord's Test-best 193 on Sunday, then opted for spin.

And it took Herath just four balls to bowl Trott, playing over the top of a dipping delivery.

Trott's exit meant Pietersen had to face Herath immediately but he played out the over with two forward defensive shots.

Cook then drove Fernando through the covers for a sixth four to go to an 86-ball fifty.

An even bigger roar came after Pietersen, advancing confidently down the pitch, drove Herath straight back over the bowler's head for the first four of his innings.

Earlier, Sri Lanka lost two wickets - Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera - for no runs in three balls to be 6 for 409.

But wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, who made 112 in the first innings in Cardiff, hit back with a stylish 40 featuring a six and five fours and put on 57 with Herath in a lively seventh-wicket stand.

England's pace attack, wayward on Sunday in the absence of injured Ashes spearhead James Anderson, showed signs of early improvement Monday.

But a huge total of 58 extras, including 23 byes, most of which could not be blamed on wicketkeeper Matt Prior, was evidence of a lack of accuracy.

Steven Finn, recalled in place of Anderson, took 4 for 108 while off-spinner Graeme Swann polished off the tail with 3 for 8 in 16 balls.

Dizzy named Australia A assistant

Updated June 3, 2011 16:35:00

Former Australian paceman Jason Gillespie has been appointed an assistant coach for Australia A's tour of Zimbabwe this month, Cricket Australia said.

Gillespie, who captured 259 Test wickets for Australia in a 10-year career, will support head coach Troy Cooley on the month-long tour, which includes one-day and four-day matches.

Gillespie, 36, joins former Test players Justin Langer, Darren Lehmann and Craig McDermott in national and state level coaching roles.

"CA feels this A tour presents a good opportunity to further enhance Jason's elite coaching experience," CA general manager Michael Brown said.

"Jason has recently coached in Zimbabwe and understands the conditions we'll face there.

"Many of the young up-and-coming players he'll be working with followed his successful international career as schoolboys."

Gillespie spent last southern hemisphere summer as head coach of the MidWest Rhinos in Zimbabwe's first-class competition and was recently the bowling coach for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League.

"This Australia A tour allows me to further dip my toe into the elite coaching system, to work with some of the best young cricket talent in Australia and to learn from experienced bowling coaches like Troy Cooley," Gillespie said.

Australia A will play a one-day tri-series involving Zimbabwe and South Africa A, before finishing with two four-day matches against Zimbabwe.

CA advised to dump split-innings

Posted June 1, 2011 19:16:00

The success of this year's World Cup is set to end Cricket Australia's experiment with a split-innings limited overs competition.

Last summer's domestic one-day cup featured several innovations, designed to revive interest in the limited overs format, including having a team's 45 overs broken up into innings of 20 and 25 overs.

But after the 2011 World Cup proved a hit with fans, Cricket Australia's playing conditions committee (PCC) said the International Cricket Council (ICC) would be reluctant to alter the current 50-over international format before the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Therefore, the committee - which provided its recommendations on the domestic one-day competition innovations to Cricket Australia on Wednesday - said the split innings idea should be dropped for next summer's tournament.

Committee chairman Jack Clarke did however suggest other innovations such as using a different ball from either end and reducing restrictions on the number of overs a bowler can deliver should continue.

In a release from the ICC, following its cricket committee's two-day meeting at Lord's in London last month, the two-ball idea should be brought into international one-day cricket, while other measures from the domestic one-day cup should be trialled at international level.

"Overall, the public response to innovations, which were trialled to test ways of refreshing the 50-over format, was good and the public said it liked the split innings," Clarke said.

"A number of the ideas we tried, such as using two balls, one from each end, reducing restrictions on the number of overs bowlers can deliver or increasing the number of bouncers allowed, are being either supported or tested further by the International Cricket Council for possible global use.

"CA intends to continue trialling these playing conditions in the 2011-12 (domestic one-day cup)."

"But on split innings, the PCC today noted its public popularity, but decided to ask the full CA board to note that the 50-over format will continue to be used for the next ICC Cricket World Cup and to therefore consider having the Ryobi Cup revert to a 50-over format next summer."

Captain Fields returns for Southern Stars

Posted June 2, 2011 17:26:00

Captain Jodie Fields is returning to lead the Australian women's cricket team after an 18-month absence due to a hamstring injury.

Fields has been named as skipper of a 14-player Southern Stars squad for the four-nation series in England in June-July, which will mark champion all-rounder Shelley Nitschke's international swansong.

Wicketkeeper Field, 26, comes back into the squad at the expense of Alyssa Healy.

Dual international Ellyse Perry is also missing, unavailable as she is expected to make the Matildas squad for the FIFA women's World Cup in Germany.

Field will return before the England tour in the remaining three matches of the Rose Bowl series - deadlocked at 2-2 - against New Zealand in Brisbane on June 12, 14 and 16.

Those matches were rescheduled following the Christchurch earthquake.

Chief selector Christina Matthews was full of praise for Nitschke's career after she confirmed her pending international retirement.

The 34-year-old Nitschke has played six Tests, 74 one-day internationals and 32 Twenty20 matches for Australia since debuting in 2004.

"Shelley has been a pivotal and very valued member of the squad," Matthews said.

"Her contribution to Australian cricket has been outstanding over a long period and, after the quad series, we wish her well for life after cricket."

Following the Rose Bowl, Australia head to England for a series of clashes with the hosts, India and New Zealand.

Australian squad: Jodie Fields (c), Alex Blackwell, Jessica Cameron, Sarah Coyte, Rachael Haynes, Jessica Jonassen, Meg Lanning, Annie Maloney, Sharon Millanta, Shelley Nitschke, Erin Osborne, Leah Poulton, Clea Smith, Lisa Sthalekar.

Cricket greats join Jenner farewell

Updated May 31, 2011 21:22:00

Cricketing greats from across four decades have farewelled spin coach and former Test bowler Terry Jenner at a funeral in Adelaide, with Shane Warne declaring he owed his success to his mentor.

Warne told about 450 mourners at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday that Jenner was a character, and both cricket and life were better to have had him around.

He said Jenner had played a big part in both his personal and sporting lives, and saying goodbye recently was difficult.

"The last chat a few weeks ago was quite tough," Warne said.

"We didn't say a lot but we said enough.

"I just thanked him for everything he had helped me with. I wouldn't have been able to achieve without TJ."

Warne also served as a pallbearer at the funeral along with South Australian leg spinner Cullen Bailey.

Those to farewell Jenner included former batting great Doug Walters, Test wicketkeepers Rod Marsh and Ian Healy, and former Australian captains Ian and Greg Chappell.

Bailey told the gathering that he had first come under Jenner's influence at a coaching clinic when he was just 11.

"He was my coach, mentor, ally, friend and a father figure," Bailey said.

"No one knew or loved spin bowling like TJ."

The service was also read a message on behalf of the English Cricket Board (ECB), which described the 66-year-old as a great bloke as well as a great coach.

"TJ touched a great many people," the ECB said.

"His legacy will live on through the careers of the coaches and bowlers he inspired and influenced.

"It wasn't just his knowledge and his skills that we loved, it was his humour and his generosity, and his passion that he had for spin that came across in his coaching."

Jenner died last Wednesday after suffering a major heart attack last year.

He played nine Test matches for Australia in the 1970s but was best remembered as a spin bowling coach and most particularly for his union with Warne.

The partnership began in about 1990 and continued for the next two decades, and helped Jenner return to mainstream society after serving 18 months in jail for fraud in 1988-89.

Jenner, who said he stole money to pay gambling debts, is the only Australian Test cricketer to be jailed.

After his heart attack he was largely restricted to his Adelaide home, though he made an appearance at Adelaide Oval in October for a testimonial dinner.

Trott cracks double ton in rainy Wales

Updated May 30, 2011 06:56:00

Jonathan Trott struck a double century and Ian Bell went to the brink of a hundred as England piled on the runs against a depleted Sri Lanka attack in the first Test in Cardiff on Sunday.

England was 5 for 491 in reply to Sri Lanka's first innings 400, a lead of 91, at stumps with just one day of the rain-marred first of a three-Test series remaining.

Trott made 209 and put on 160 for the fifth wicket with Warwickshire colleague Bell, unbeaten on 98 at the close. Eoin Morgan was 14 not out.

It was the composed Trott's second Test double hundred following his 226 against Bangladesh at Lord's last year.

It was also one of his six Test hundreds, four of which have been in excess of 150 - a remarkable conversion rate that has helped Trott to an average of 66.77, second only to that of Australia great Sir Donald Bradman's mark of 99.94.

Trott's more than eight-hour innings eventually ended when he was bowled making room to cut against the spin of Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan, having faced 409 balls with 17 boundaries.

He has however been criticised for slow scoring and in taking 190 balls to make 78 runs on Sunday he gave his detractors some ammunition.

It was a different story though for Trott's fellow South Africa-born batsman Kevin Pietersen, whose well-documented problems against left-arm spin continued when he fell to Rangana Herath for just 3.

England, after rain washed out the whole of Sunday's morning session, resumed on 2 for 287 with Alastair Cook 129 not out and Trott 125 not out.

Cook had added just four runs when he edged a cut off Farveez Maharoof to wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene to end a partnership of 251 with Trott.

Pietersen had looked uncomfortable in the four balls he had previously faced from Herath before he went back, with a cross-bat, to a delivery that kept low.

Sri Lanka's lbw appeal was rejected by West Indian umpire Billy Doctrove, prompting a review.

Australian third umpire Rod Tucker, after several minutes' study, eventually decided the ball had hit the pad, and not Pietersen's bat, first.

It was the 19th time in Tests and 43rd occasion in all international cricket Pietersen had been dismissed by a left-arm spinner.

Bell, by contrast, drove Herath for six.

But he had a lucky break on 19 when a cut off seamer Maharoof was dropped in the gully by former capain and wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara, while ragged outfielding saw Sri Lanka give up several boundaries.

Bell cashed in against an attack missing retired stars Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga and Chaminda Vaas, as well as injured seamers Nuwan Pradeep and Dilhara Fernando.
