Second Test resumes after rain

Updated November 21, 2011 22:42:42

Play finally got underway at 10:00pm (AEDT) on the final day of the second Test between Australia and South Africa after a rainy morning in Johannesburg.

The tourists resumed at 3 for 142, needing a further 168 runs to win and square the series.

Ricky Ponting resumed on 54, hoping for an opportunity to make a match-saving and perhaps career-saving century.

Captain Michael Clarke was the other unbeaten batsman on 1, but fell shortly after play resumed when he was bowled by Vernon Philander after adding just one run to his name.

Rain fell all morning at The Wanderers but it stopped around midday local time and the ground staff worked hard to drain the ground.

The forecast for the rest of Monday still is not great, with showers around and bad light a potential problem in the later afternoon.

The weather means Australia only has a short window to attack if it hopes to win.

South Africa recorded an emphatic victory in the first Test in Cape Town last week, meaning a draw will be enough for the hosts to claim the series.
