Shehzad ton steers Pakistan to victory

Posted April 26, 2011 10:50:00

Opener Ahmed Shehzad struck his second one-day international hundred to anchor Pakistan to a confident seven-wicket victory over West Indies.

Shehzad hit seven fours and one six in his 102 from 148 balls as Pakistan successfully chased 221 for victory in the second ODI at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Umar Akmal carried the visitors over the threshold with 12 balls remaining when he lofted a delivery from Dwayne Bravo to long-off for the final boundary of the match.

The result means that Pakistan takes a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after winning the first game by eight wickets on Saturday at the same ground.

Pakistan has now won its last seven ODIs against West Indies, a sequence spread over the last four years.

"We made a plan at our team meeting and our guys stuck to it and that was good," said Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi.

"Shehzad is a very talented guy and he showed that he is capable of performing. He took his time, but chasing a small total, he could afford to do that and we won the game.

"I think our bowlers are doing a great job, and the fielding has improved because it is a very important area for us. Our batting has shown responsibility and we hope to maintain this discipline right throughout the series."

The visitors' spin bowling trio of Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez and Afridi had dominated on another docile pitch.

After Pakistan chose to field, West Indies was dismissed for 220 in 50 overs - one less than the total it made in the first ODI.

Ajmal, Hafeez and Afridi shared six wickets for 102 runs in 30 overs between them, and only West Indies opener Lendl Simmons looked close to getting on top of them, leading the way with 51 from 48 balls, which included four fours and two sixes.

"We didn't make use of the key moments in the match," said West Indies captain Darren Sammy.

"We could have tried to squeeze their batsmen more and when we batted we got a good start, but did not capitalise on it.

"The spinners continue to bog us down, and we could have got a lot more on the board. It seems that whatever approach we have taken, we seem only able to get the same kind of total on the board. We have a lot more work to do."

Shehzad shared three successive half-century partnerships with Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq that put Pakistan firmly on course for its victory.

He glanced a delivery in the 44th over from Dwayne Bravo to deep fine leg for a single to reach his milestone from 143 balls.

"We tried to keep wickets in hand. It was not a huge total so I knew that I had to control my stroke-play and not get carried away," said Shehzad.

He was fortunate on 30 when he came close to being run out after pulling a delivery from Bravo to mid-wicket and Hafeez turned down the chance of going for a single.

Sammy fired his throw from mid-wicket wide of the stumps and the opener was able to regain his ground.

By the time he became the second wicket for leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo in the 46th over, Pakistan required just 30 from the final 28 deliveries which came with little trouble.

The third and fourth matches of the series will be played on Thursday and Monday at Kensington Oval in Barbados, with the final game coming three days later at the Guyana National Stadium.

Hussey stars in Chennai victory

Posted April 26, 2011 06:02:00

Michael Hussey hit a half-century and Albie Morkel bagged three wickets to help Chennai Super Kings post a 25-run win over Pune Warriors in their Indian Premier League match.

Australian Hussey made a 48-ball 61 and South African paceman Morkel took 3 for 29 as Chennai bowled and fielded impressively to restrict Pune to 9 for 117 after scoring 6 for 142 for its third win in six matches of the Twenty20 tournament.

Pune could never recover after being reduced to 4 for 40 in the opening six overs, with off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Morkel taking two wickets apiece.

Australian paceman Doug Bollinger finished with 2 for 20.

Skipper Yuvraj Singh top-scored with 34 for Pune, who suffered their third defeat in five matches.

His 43-ball knock ended when Shadab Jakati held a superb diving catch in the covers off Morkel in the penultimate over.

Mithun Manhas was the other main scorer for Pune with 20.

Hussey earlier hit one six and six fours in his half-century to help Chennai reach a competitive total despite impressive bowling efforts from Pune pacemen Jerome Taylor (3 for 30) and Alfonso Thomas (2 for 29).

Put in to bat, Chennai made a solid start when Murali Vijay (31) and Hussey put on 64 for the opening wicket before Pune struck back with two quick wickets.

South African Thomas had Vijay caught by New Zealander Nathan McCullum at mid-wicket and then bowled Suresh Raina for two runs in the same over.

Hussey steadied the innings with a 52-run stand for the third wicket with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (26) before West Indies paceman Taylor, playing his first IPL match, took three of the last four wickets.

Taylor struck in his third over when he removed Hussey, who fell to a well-judged catch at long-on boundary by Manish Pandey, before dismissing Morkel in the same over.

Sri Lanka's Malinga quits Tests

Posted April 23, 2011 08:19:00

Injury-prone Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga has quit Test cricket in a bid to prolong his career in one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches.

Malinga is playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and had recently made himself unavailable for Sri Lanka's tour of England, attracting criticism that he had chosen to play for club over country.

"In January this year I wrote a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket and released a statement to the media confirming that I planned to reassess my Test future after the World Cup," he said in a statement.

"I decided that I needed to make myself unavailable for Test cricket in an effort to prolong my career as a national cricketer for Sri Lanka.

"Although I am sufficiently fit to play both ODI and T20 cricket, I have a long-standing degenerative condition in my right knee that needs to be carefully managed."

The 27-year-old Malinga, known for bowling accurate yorkers, bagged 101 wickets in 30 Tests with his slinging action since making his debut against Australia in Darwin in 2004.

He took a three-year break from Test cricket until coming back to the format when he figured in a home series against India in 2010. He has three five-wicket hauls in a Test innings to his credit.

"I did try to return to Test cricket after a three-year absence last year following requests from the team management and the selectors, but it left me unfit nursing severe knee pain for two months," Malinga said.

"I have realised that the heavy workload of Test cricket, which requires a fast bowler to be able to bowl more than 15 overs, sometimes on consecutive days, could lead to permanent injury.

"I have carefully considered my options and have decided that not playing Test cricket will help me achieve my goal of representing Sri Lanka in the 2012 World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup."

Bishoo delivers victory to Windies

Posted April 22, 2011 11:45:00

Leg spinner Devendra Bishoo captured four wickets while Lendl Simmons composed a fluent 65 as West Indies beat Pakistan by seven runs in the first ever Twenty20 international between the sides.

Umar Akmal led the way with 41, Asad Shafiq made 25, and Saeed Ajmal scored 21 not out as the Pakistanis were restricted to 9 for 143 in their 20 overs, chasing 151 for victory at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

"I think the pitch was good for batsmen, and I don't know why we missed this opportunity to win this match," said Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi.

"We are not building any partnerships. This is what has been missing for us for a few months. Bishoo bowled really well, and all of their bowlers delivered in the right areas."

The visitors' batting was undermined chiefly by leg-spinner Bishoo, whose four wickets for 17 runs from his allotted four overs earned him the man-of-the-match award, and Ravi Rampaul supported with 3 for 31 from four overs.

"The jump from domestic cricket to international cricket is a big difference," said Bishoo.

"You have to be far more containing because the batsmen take good balls and turn them into bad balls. The pitch was a good pitch and I felt it would slide onto the bat."

Pakistan bowlers' looked short of work as opener Simmons struck seven fours and two sixes in the top score of 65 from 44 deliveries as West Indies built a total of 7 for 150 from 20 overs.

Abdur Rehman gave Pakistan an early breakthrough, when he trapped Andre Fletcher lbw for one, but Simmons and Darren Bravo added 99 for the second wicket to put West Indies back on track for a decent total.

Rehman made the breakthrough again when he had Bravo caught at long-on for 42, and West Indies wobbled the rest of the way, with no other batsman passing 20.

Rehman, Wahab Riaz and Saeed Ajmal collected two wickets apiece for Pakistan.

Pakistan made a shaky start to their chase and soon slid to 4 for 49 in the seventh over when Bishoo tightened the screws, having Asad Shafiq caught at short mid-on with his fourth delivery, and next ball, had Misbah-ul-Haq hit wicket for a first-ball duck.

Akmal tried to keep the momentum going in the middle of the innings, but Bishoo had Afridi caught at extra cover for 12 to effectively dent Pakistan's hopes.

The two sides contest the first one-day international in a series of five, starting on Saturday at the same venue.

Windies forced me to chose IPL: Gayle

Posted April 21, 2011 08:20:00

Explosive batsman Chris Gayle claims he was frozen out by the West Indies Cricket Board and was left with no option but to choose the money-spinning IPL over national team duty.

The former captain said he was forced to accept an offer to play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore because he was not sure about his place in the West Indies team, following his axing for the opening matches of Pakistan's tour.

West Indies officials reacted angrily to Gayle's decision, and said they were less than pleased with the manner in which the he handled the situation.

They begrudgingly gave him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the IPL.

But a few hours later Gayle blasted the WICB in a revealing radio interview from India.

He said after getting injured during the World Cup, he paid all expenses for medical treatment in Britain before returning home to Jamaica, where he took it upon himself to commence a rehabilitation program with his personal trainer.

"A group of players were selected for a training camp in Barbados, and I never got a call, nobody spoke to me, and I decided to leave it alone," an emotional Gayle said in an hour-long interview on Jamaican radio station, KLAS Sports.

"I continued my training program, and I came to find out via the media that a Twenty20 squad was announced, and a one-day International squad was announced, and I was stunned when I saw a big headline in the newspapers, 'Gayle, Sarwan, Chanderpaul dropped'."

Gayle said he was puzzled because no WICB official had actually called to check-up on him.

He felt the least they could have done was to call him to the training camp at the West Indies High Performance Centre in Bridgetown, and assess his fitness before making a decision about the team.

"The only communication I have had with anyone connected with the WICB was when I sent a text message to (team physio) CJ Clark, and gave him an update about how I was doing," he said.

"I told him I was feeling good, the progress I was making, I was running, I was in the gym, and working. His only response was that he would send a fitness program, which I did not receive until the IPL offer had presented itself."

He continued: "I wanted to get back on track as quickly as possible. I wanted to play and represent West Indies.

"This was my ultimate goal, since I did not have a contract, but I was forced into this decision because teams were picked, I was not informed about what was happening, and I did not know what the future would hold.

"The matches could be played, and other players do well, and I could still be sitting on the sidelines, so I had no other choice."

Gayle said when he requested the NOC from the WICB, there was a hive of activity, and correspondence from various officials was coming left, right, and centre.

"All of a sudden, everybody got energy, and they were trying to contact me," he said.

"As much as I wanted to play for West Indies, they left me with no choice.

"I have served West Indies for many years, but I was disrespected a lot, and I have been playing under a lot of pressure."

Pakistan will play one Twenty20, five ODIs and two Tests against West Indies during its tour which starts on Thursday.

The WICB, who said that so far a national squad had only been named for the T20 and first two ODIs, was "most disappointed" at Gayle's conduct.

"The WICB does not accept Gayle's reason for making himself unavailable but as he has already clearly made his choice and has travelled to India, the WICB does not wish to stand in his way," it said in a press release.

Kochi, Mumbai win in IPL thrillers

Posted April 21, 2011 06:56:00

Kochi Tuskers Kerala pulled off a stunning six-run win against favourites Kolkata Knight Riders in a thrilling Indian Premier League match.

Ravindra Jadeja struck an 18-ball 29 with three sixes and a four to take Kochi to 7 for 132 before Kolkata were restricted to 9 for 126 off 20 overs on a slow Eden Gardens track.

In the other match of the day, Mumbai Indians rode on a clinical effort by their bowlers to hand a seven-wicket thrashing to Pune Warriors from the final ball and register their third win in four matches.

Kolkata, leading the points table before this match, lost quick wickets in its chase and could never recover from the early setbacks despite a fighting 46-run knock by Manoj Tiwary.

Jadeja impressed with the ball as well, picking up two wickets including the key scalp of Tiwary.

It was Kolkata's second defeat from five outings and Kochi's third win from as many games.

Spinners Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan earlier shared six wickets after Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to field.

New Zealand star Brendon McCullum (23) and Mahela Jayawardene (25) gave Kochi a steady start, putting on 49 runs for the opening wicket.

It was Bangladesh left-arm spinner Shakib who gave Kolkata a key breakthrough when he had McCullum caught by Eoin Morgan while Pathan accounted for Jayawardene, Brad Hodge and Parthiv Patel in quick succession.

In Mumbai, Munaf Patel grabbed three wickets for eight runs while Ali Murtaza and Abu Nechim took two apiece to bowl out Pune for 118 in 17.2 overs before Mumbai overhauled the target off the last ball.

Skipper Sachin Tendulkar scored a fine 35 off 39 balls and shared 74 runs for the second wicket with Ambati Rayudu (37) to set the platform for the chase.

Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds (16 not out) hit two fours in the 18th over and Rohit Sharma (20 not out) brought off the winning runs with a six to give Mumbai their third victory in four matches.

Pune failed to bat out 20 overs despite a 45-run knock by Robin Uthappa who perished to a blinder of a catch by West Indian Kieron Pollard.

It was the second defeat for the IPL debutants in four games.

Sohal, Sangakkara shape Deccan win

Posted April 20, 2011 06:48:00

Little-known opener Sunny Sohal hit a half-century and Kumar Sangakkara made a solid 49 to set up Deccan Chargers' 16-run win over Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League overnight.

The second match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain in Bangalore.

Rajasthan has two wins and Bangalore one after five games.

Sohal top-scored with an impressive 62 as Deccan posted a competitive 4 for 168 before restricting Delhi to 7 for 152 for its second victory in five matches of the Twenty20 tournament.

Australian David Warner scored a 48-ball 51 with the help of one six and five fours for Delhi, which suffered its third defeat in four games. He added 52 for the fourth wicket with Venugopal Rao (21).

Seamer Harmeet Singh bagged two crucial wickets, including that of skipper Virender Sehwag (12), to put Delhi under pressure, while Australian paceman Daniel Christian finished with 2 for 38.

Yogesh Nagar (23) and Australian James Hopes (17 not out) were the other main scorers for Delhi.

Sohal, who smashed a six and a four off successive balls from South African fast bowler Morne Morkel, earlier put on 92 for the second wicket with skipper Sangakkara.

Sri Lankan Sangakkara, who hit one six and eight fours in his 35-ball knock, looked set to reach his half-century before falling in a bid to step up the run-rate.

Australian Cameron White helped Deccan cross the 150-mark with a brisk 25-ball 31 not out in the closing overs.

ICC to re-consider 2015 World Cup format

Posted April 19, 2011 21:53:00

The controversial decision to restrict the 2015 World Cup to only the 10 full members will be reconsidered by International Cricket Council's (ICC) executive board in June, the governing body said on Tuesday.

In an April 4 meeting in Mumbai, the board had decided to confine the 2015 World Cup participation to the 10 full members, triggering protest from weaker sides such as Ireland and the Netherlands.

"After receiving representations from the associate and affiliate members of the ICC, the ICC president Mr Sharad Pawar has decided to request the ICC executive board to revisit the issue in Hong Kong in June," the statement read.

"I have given this matter further serious thought and will request the board to consider this topic once more," Pawar was quoted as saying in the statement.

The board had also agreed in Mumbai that the 10 teams for the 2019 World Cup would be determined on the basis of qualification.

Pinocchio (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)

Pinocchio (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)Commissioned to come up with a soundtrack for the 1994 Turner Network Television special The Native Americans, Robbie Robertson delivered some of his most haunting and evocative work to date. Combining the sleek atmospherics of 1991's Storyville with traditional tribal chanting and instrumentation, Music for the Native Americans often manages to sound both contemporary and timeless. Unfortunately, Robertson's lyrics are often as clunky as they are well intentioned--though brief, his liner notes are far more powerful and informative--and his gravelly speak-singing is consistently outclassed by Native American guest vocalists Pura Fe, Soni, and Jen, whose "Mahk Jchi (Heartbeat Drum Song)" is also the album's highlight. Clarke wants to be part of review

Posted April 15, 2011 23:08:00

New Test and one-day captain Michael Clarke is very keen to deliver his views to the coming review of Australian cricket before embarking on a first full campaign in charge.

Clarke returned to Sydney on Friday evening after leading his to a 3-0 one-day whitewash of Bangladesh, his first assignment since taking over from Ricky Ponting.

Clarke said he enjoyed 100 per cent support from his team-mates, who now acknowledged it was his team rather than that of his predecessor, who was also part of the squad.

While looking forward to a break, Clarke said he would also contribute to the review following Australia's disastrous Ashes campaign.

"This is probably the important time for me to spend as much time as I can with the people who make a lot of decisions about our game and make sure we are on the same page and wit the same goals and we are heading in the same direction," he said at Sydney Airport.

"I'm excited to be home and have a bit of time off, but I'm very keen to get to Melbourne and spend some time with Cricket Australia and the selectors as well."

Clarke acknowledged he would face a testing first full season in charge with challenges against strong opposition in Sri Lanka, South Africa and India looming over the next year.

"We have some pretty tough cricket ahead of us, the next 12 months are going to be really full on, both Test and one-day cricket and leading up to a Twenty20 World Cup," Clarke said.

The clean sweep of Bangladesh consolidated Australia's position at the top of the ODI rankings and Clarke insisted the side deserved to remain top despite failing to make the semi-finals of the recent World Cup.

"The statistics say we are number one for good reason, we've won a lot of one-day games for a long period of time," he said.

"I certainly think we've earned the right to be the number one one-day team in the world.

"In saying that, I certainly think there's a lot of work to be done on our game to improve and keep getting better."

After being told in-form Shane Watson was number one all-rounder and number four in the ODI batting rankings, Clarke joked "he's got three more placings to climb, hasn't he?"

"He's a wonderful player no doubt. His form over the last 12 to 18 months has been as good as anybody in the world, he's definitely a big part of our team in all forms of the game."

Watson is one of several Australians now playing in the Indian Premier League and Clarke said he would certainly consider participating in that competition in the future.

"If my body is up to it and I feel like I'm really keen to play some cricket, I'd love to take part in the IPL," he said.

Australia and Watson ODI kings

Updated April 15, 2011 07:07:00

Australia remains the top-ranked side in one-day international cricket, despite its early exit from the World Cup.

A quarter-final defeat by subsequent Cup-winner India last month meant Australia failed to follow up its three successive victories in the tournament since 1999.

But it did not stop it staying clear of Test ranking table-topper India - by 128 points to 120 - on the April 1 cut-off date for the yearly award.

Both Australia, by beating Bangladesh in a three-match series, and India - after its Cup final win over Sri Lanka in Mumbai - have since improved their points tallies, but not their overall positions.

Meanwhile Australia's Shane Watson is now the premier one-day international all-rounder, overtaking Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan into number one position after taking three wickets and scoring 294 runs against Bangladesh.

Watson's scores of 37, 185 not out and 72 in the series have also helped the 29-year-old Queenslander vault nine places to a career-best fourth position in the batsman's stakes.

He is now the highest-ranked Australian batsman with Mike Hussey staying in sixth place, captain Michael Clarke rising two places to 11th spot and former captain Ricky Ponting moving one place up to 16th position.

In the ODI bowling rankings, Mitchell Johnson's seven wickets in the Bangladesh series lifted him seven places to sixth position.

Brett Lee is the other Australian bowler who has improved his ranking, returning to the top 20 in 20th position after a jump of three places.

India finished 11 points clear of South Africa at the top of the ICC's Test table.

England, a further two points adrift in third, has prospects of eroding India's lead significantly if it fares well on home soil against it and Sri Lanka.

The inaugural Test championship is expected to take place between the top teams in 2013, with England the most likely venue.

Both India and Australia have won $175,000 as first prize for finishing top of the respective Test and ODI rankings.

Hussey ton buries Bangladesh

Updated April 14, 2011 06:19:00

Michael Hussey scored his first one-day century in four years to help Australia complete a 3-0 clean sweep against Bangladesh with a 66-run win in the third and final match in Dhaka.

The middle-order batsman cracked two sixes and nine fours in a 91-ball 108 for his third one-day hundred, and his first since February 2007, as Australia posted a huge 8 for 361 in the day-night match.

Bangladesh made a bold reply before finishing at 6 for 295 with an impressive 93 from opener Imrul Kayes, who hit two sixes and 10 fours in his 95-ball knock.

Kayes batted confidently against both pace and spin and looked set to complete his second one-day century before being caught behind off debutant paceman James Pattinson.

He put on 136 for the second wicket with Shahriar Nafees, who made 60 for his second successive half-century. Mohammad Mahmudullah was the other notable contributor with an unbeaten 68.

Australia virtually wrapped up the match when all-rounder Shane Watson dismissed skipper Shakib Al Hasan (9) and Mushfiqur Rahim (1) in one over.

"It was a good series and an outstanding effort from the boys. As a captain I need to keep learning," said Australian skipper Michael Clarke, leading in his first one-day series after being named captain last month.

"Watson is enjoying his batting and also doing the job with the ball."

A disappointed Shakib said: "We batted really well and executed our plans, but we haven't bowled well in three games. It's a learning process and we will learn from it."

Man-of-the-series Watson, who hit a record 15 sixes in his career-best 185 not out in the previous match on Monday, earlier put Australia on course for a big total with a 40-ball 72 which contained three sixes and 11 fours.

Man-of-the-match Hussey was then involved in two useful stands, adding 89 for the fourth wicket with Clarke (47) and 70 for the sixth wicket with Mitchell Johnson, who hammered 41 off just 24 balls.

Hussey fell in the last over, trapped lbw by seamer Shafiul Islam, but not before boosting his team's chances of sweeping the series.

Australia got off to an explosive start after winning the toss as Watson and makeshift opener Ricky Ponting (47) added 110 runs for the opening wicket in just 11.5 overs.

Watson began aggressively, hitting Shafiul for four boundaries in an over early in his innings before pulling left-arm spinner Shakib over mid-wicket for a six to reach his half-century.

The Australian opener, who completed his fifty off just 25 balls with the help of two sixes and nine fours, was bowled in the 12th over while attempting to sweep left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak.

Ponting also played attractive shots during his 50-ball knock, hitting two fours and a six from a Mashrafe Mortaza over. He looked well set before being trapped lbw by Razzak.

Razzak finished with 3 for 58 and Mortaza with 3 for 80.

Tendulkar named Wisden Cricketer of Year

Posted April 14, 2011 07:49:00

Sachin Tendulkar has been named Wisden's Cricketer of the Year for 2010, crowning a golden month for "the little master" which also saw him play a starring role in India's World Cup triumph.

Tendulkar's honour from the cricketing bible means India has won the accolade three years running following the back-to-back awards for Virender Sehwag in each of the previous two years.

It follows another prolific run-scoring year for the 37-year-old Tendulkar, who rattled off more than 1,500 Test runs including seven Test hundreds, including a record 50th overall, in 2010.

Tendulkar is also on the brink of hitting 100 international centuries, currently on 99.

He also became the first player to hit a double-century in a one-day international.

"Wisden acknowledges his greatness by naming him as the leading cricketer in the world for 2010," Tendulkar's citation in Wisden read.

Tendulkar's batting also saw him earn a spot in Wisden's 2010 Test XI, along with Sehwag and Bangladesh's Tamim Iqbal.

Other players to feature in the world XI were England off-spinner Graeme Swann and fast bowler James Anderson.

However for the first time, no Australian was included in the all-star line-up.

All-rounder Smith to have ankle surgery

Posted April 14, 2011 18:34:00

Young all-rounder Steve Smith will have surgery next week to fix an ankle injury which has bothered him throughout the Australian cricket season.

It means the 21-year-old, who made his international debut in all three forms of the game last year, is expected to miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) season with new franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

But the setback is not expected to keep him out of Australia's next tour, of Sri Lanka, which is almost four months away.

"Steve has had long-standing minor left ankle pain during the Australian summer," team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.

"Now is considered an opportune time to have surgery on the ankle.

"That will take place next week so he can adequately prepare for upcoming Australian cricket."

The leg spinner and middle-order batsman played in three Ashes Tests during the summer, as well as the Twenty20 and one-day series against England and the World Cup.

He was also part of the Australian team which completed a 3-0 clean sweep of its one-day series against Bangladesh with a win in Dhaka on Wednesday night.

Hussey to bat on as long as he can

Posted April 13, 2011 13:52:00

Australia batsman Mike Hussey says he has no plans of retiring from international cricket.

A staunch backer of Ponting's decision to stay on after relinquishing the Australia captaincy, Hussey says the arrival of the Michael Clarke era will not change his determination to bat on for as long as possible either.

While Sachin Tendulkar's unstinting form at almost 38 years of age has been offered as a model for a potential post-captaincy Ponting purple patch, Hussey too is inspired by the 'Little Master'.

"It took me so long just to get one game, I think it took over 10 years, so I want to try to play as many games as I possibly can," Hussey said.

"And I want to be part of the new [era], I want to help the new guys coming in.

"We've got a nice blend, I think, at the moment, of some experienced players and then we've got some really young guys.

"I definitely see a bit of a role to play there in trying to help those guys adapt to international cricket."

Hussey says Ponting remains one of the world's best batsmen and an essential team member.

"For me personally and I know for Ricky as well, I've got a lot of inspiration from watching guys like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid that have played so well in the last couple of years," he said.

Hussey, 35, says while his enjoyment and form remain, so will he.

Given his fight to achieve his two most recent selection targets - the Ashes and World Cup - his heart and passion are beyond question.

Hussey was no certainty for the Ashes until he broke a poor trot with a century in his final lead-up Sheffield Shield innings, before being Australia's best batsman of the series.

His World Cup bid was almost stymied by injury, before Doug Bollinger got hurt and the seeming relaxation of rules governing who could replace him allowed a fit-again Hussey to fill the breach.

"When I was actually able to go over and play in the World Cup, I was quietly quite proud really, because it took a lot of hard work to get myself back into a fit state," Hussey said.

A tour of Sri Lanka in August is Australia's next calendar item and Hussey's next mission.

"I've never toured Sri Lanka before, so it's certainly another goal of mine, to play in that country and obviously try to do well," he said.

Sri Lanka recalls players from IPL

Posted April 13, 2011 07:01:00

Sri Lanka's sports authority has ordered its cricketers playing in the ongoing Indian Premier League to return home for training ahead of next month's tour of England.

Sports Minister Mahinadananda Althugamage said he wanted team members to prioritise the national side over the IPL, which is financially lucrative for players.

"In future, national cricket players can participate in foreign tournaments only in a manner that will not affect practices of the Sri Lankan national team," the ministry said in a statement.

It said those who are selected for the three-Test series in England will have to return home for practices despite their commitments in the ongoing IPL Twenty20 tournament.

Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara and his deputy Mahela Jayawardene are among 11 Sri Lankan national players in the IPL and at least five of them are tipped to be included in the squad for England.

The statement did not say how the players will be penalised if they did not attend practices as required under a new sports ministry decree, but official sources said they were likely to be dropped if they did not comply.

Sri Lanka cricket has seen a spate of resignations following the side's defeat in the World Cup final against India earlier this month.

Bangladesh axes coach Siddons

Posted April 13, 2011 05:07:00

Bangladesh has shown the door to its Australian coach Jamie Siddons, after the national team failed to make it to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

"It has been agreed that head coach Jamie Siddons' contract, which expires on June 30, will not be extended," the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a press statement.

"We are really appreciative of Jamie's contribution over the last four years and the successes he has had with the national team.

"However, we feel the time is right to ring in changes in the team management and support staff."

Bangladesh, which co-hosted the World Cup along with India and Sri Lanka, made an early exit from the showpiece event, going down to huge defeats to India, West Indies and South Africa in the league stages.

Australian-born Siddons took charge of Bangladesh in November 2007.

Bangladesh has also lost the first two one-dayers of an ongoing three-match series against Australia to concede an unbeatable 2-0 lead.

The third and final one-dayer will be played in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Watson 'not trying for records'

Updated April 12, 2011 07:17:00

Record-breaking Australian batsman Shane Watson said he was just trying to get the best out of himself, rather than chase milestones, as he tore Bangladesh apart in the second one-dayer in Dhaka.

The opener hammered a world-record 15 sixes in his unbeaten 185 off 96 balls as Australia crushed Bangladesh by nine wickets to gain an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

West Indies' Xavier Marshall was the previous record-holder with 12 sixes against Canada in 2008.

"In the end, I'm not comparing myself to anyone. It doesn't worry me if there's someone better than me or ranked higher than me," said man-of-the-match Watson.

"I'm just trying to get the best out of myself I possibly can."

Watson's knock was also the highest by an Australian in one-day internationals, surpassing Matthew Hayden's 181 not out against New Zealand in Hamilton four years ago.

The 29-year-old also had a chance of breaking Hayden's record 66-ball century, the fastest by an Australian in one-dayers.

"I don't know exactly how many balls Hayden faced," said Watson, who took 69 balls to complete his hundred.

"I'm not playing to break records or anything like that. I'm just trying to back myself and if it comes off like it did today then it's brilliant.

"But I'm not going out with any thought of breaking records.

"As I walked off I thought I was close to Matt Hayden. I actually played in the game and got 60 in the game Matt Hayden got 181. It's nice everything came off for me today."

Watson said he tried to go for big shots as he was feeling tired in hot and humid conditions.

"The reason I kept going after reaching 100 is because I was tired and didn't really want to run too much. I was either going to try to hit as many sixes as I could or get out, that was as simple as it was," Watson said.

"It's just one of those days when everything you try comes out of the middle of the bat. A mis-hit goes into the gap or you get dropped. I got to a point where I got pretty tired. It was hot and humid out there."

Watson also scored the most runs (150) in boundaries in a one-day innings, breaking South African Herschelle Gibbs's record of 126.

Former captain Ricky Ponting, who watched from the other end during an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 170, praised his partner.

Ponting was unbeaten on 37 as Australia reached its victory target from only 26 overs.

"(He) made my job easy," Ponting said.

"I just had to get a single to give him the strike. No one expected it to get over that fast.

"I have been lucky to play with some great players, Watto has played some great innings... this was an amazing innings.

"Some of those sixes would have cleared any boundary in the world. It probably won't sink into us for a while how good that was."

Rahim rallies Bangladesh with unbeaten 81

Posted April 11, 2011 18:07:00

Mushfiqur Rahim cracked a brisk half-century as Bangladesh recovered from early blows to post a competitive 7 for 229 in the second one-day international against Australia on Monday.

Bangladesh, electing to bat after winning the toss, was struggling at 5 for 88 before wicketkeeper-batsman Rahim hit an 80-ball 81 not out with the help of one six and nine fours.

Rahim's best came in the closing stages of the innings when he smashed two fours and a six off successive deliveries from paceman Brett Lee before hitting two boundaries in seamer Mitchell Johnson's last over.

He played a key role in steadying the innings after Johnson (3 for 54) and leg-spinner Steven Smith (2 for 34) had put the hosts in trouble, adding 79 for the sixth wicket with Mohammad Mahmudullah (38).

Australia leads 1-0 in the three-match series following its 60-run win in the opening match in Dhaka on Saturday.

Shahriar Nafees was the only top-order batsman to offer resistance, scoring 56 off 73 balls with six fours. He fell after completing his 12th half-century in one-dayers, offering a simple return catch to Smith.

Johnson did the early damage when he removed openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes before paceman John Hastings accounted for Raqibul Hasan to reduce the hosts to 3 for 28 in the opening 12 overs.

Smith bowled skipper Shakib Al Hasan for 9 and then dismissed well-set Nafees to send the hosts reeling at 5 for 88.

Australia brought in Callum Ferguson in place of Cameron White for the only change from the side that played in the previous match, while Bangladesh replaced paceman Mashrafe Mortaza with Rubel Hossain.

The final one-dayer will be played in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Awesome Watson thumps Bangladesh

Updated April 11, 2011 21:05:00

Shane Watson smashed a record 15 sixes in a career-best 185 not out as Australia clinched the three-match series against Bangladesh with a nine-wicket win in the second one-dayer on Monday.

The explosive opener gave a superb display of power-hitting as he also cracked 15 fours in his 96-ball knock to help Australia achieve a 230-run target with 24 overs to spare for an unbeatable 2-0 lead.

West Indies' Xavier Marshall was the previous record-holder with 12 sixes against Canada in 2008.

Watson's knock was also the highest by an Australian in one-day internationals, the previous best being 181 not out by Matthew Hayden.

Watson completed his sixth one-day hundred off just 69 balls, the third-fastest by an Australia after Hayden (66 balls) and Adam Gilchrist (67 balls).

Watson looked in excellent touch from the beginning, hammering three fours in the opening over bowled by Shafiul Islam.

He raced to his half-century off just 26 balls with the help of four sixes and five boundaries.

He then reduced Bangladesh's bowlers and fielders to a state of helplessness with his onslaught, once hitting four sixes in an over from left-arm spinner Suhrawadi Shuvo.

Watson dominated an unfinished 170-run stand for the second wicket with former captain Ricky Ponting, who contributed an unbeaten 37.

Bangladesh was earlier struggling at 5 for 88 before crossing the 200-mark, thanks to wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim's unbeaten 81 off 80 balls which contained one six and nine fours.

Rahim's best came in the closing stages of the innings when he smashed two fours and a six off successive deliveries from paceman Brett Lee before hitting two boundaries in seamer Mitchell Johnson's last over.

He played a major role in steadying the innings after Johnson (3 for 54) and leg-spinner Steven Smith (2 for 34) had put the hosts in trouble, adding 79 for the sixth wicket with Mohammad Mahmudullah (38).

Smith bowled skipper Shakib Al Hasan for nine runs and then dismissed well-set Nafees to send the hosts reeling at 5 for 88.

The final one-dayer will be played in Dhaka on Wednesday.
