Pakistan finishes with Ireland flourish

Posted May 31, 2011 10:56:00

Pakistan completed a 2-0 one-day international series win over Ireland in Belfast with victory by five wickets at Stormont to round off eight months on the road.

Pakistan, set a target of 239, won with eight balls to spare thanks mainly to half-centuries from Younis Khan (64) and Umar Akmal (60 not out).

The World Cup semi-finalists have been unable to play any major matches at home since an armed attack on Sri Lanka's tour bus in Lahore in March 2009 made the country a 'no-go zone' for the world's leading teams.

But there were few signs of travel-weariness against Ireland.

Only Mohammad Hafeez, dismissed in the second over without scoring, failed but Taufiq Umar and Azhar Ali, in his first one-day international, shared 65 for the second wicket to put Pakistan back on course.

Younis Khan played the decisive innings with 64 from 74 balls, including four fours and a six.

He shared stands of 68 for the fourth wicket with captain Misbah-ul-Haq and 69 for the fifth with Akmal, who faced just 48 balls and hit six fours and a six.

The Ireland bowlers stuck to their task well with Boyd Rankin the most economical, conceding just 29 runs in his nine overs and also ending the innings of Azhar Ali, caught at slip by Paul Stirling.

It was Stirling who was named man-of-the-match after setting up the contest with a wonderfully entertaining 109, his first century against a Full Member nation, to follow ODI hundreds against Canada and, at the recent World Cup, the Netherlands.

Adelaide farewell for Terry Jenner

Posted May 31, 2011 06:47:00

Influential Australian cricket identity Terry Jenner will be farewelled at a funeral in Adelaide on Tuesday.

A host of cricket greats, including Shane Warne, will attend a service for Jenner at the Adelaide Oval.

Jenner, who died last Wednesday aged 66, played nine Test matches for Australia in the 1970s but is best remembered as a spin bowling coach.

His successful union with fellow leg spinner Warne helped Jenner return to mainstream society after serving 18 months in jail for fraud in 1988-89.

Jenner, who said he stole money to pay gambling debts, is the only Australian Test cricketer to be jailed.

The leg-spinning all-rounder suffered a major heart attack last year and had been restricted to his Adelaide home for some time.

Warne will deliver a eulogy at the evening funeral with other guests to include former Test captains Ian and Greg Chappell and Allan Border.

Afridi calls it a day

Posted May 31, 2011 07:16:00

Pakistan's Shahid Afridi has announced his retirement from all international cricket, saying he was dejected after being replaced as one-day captain following a fiery clash with coach Waqar Younis.

The 31-year-old developed differences with Waqar during the team's 3-2 win against West Indies earlier this month and his public criticism of the coach ultimately led to him losing the captaincy.

"Yes, I am now retired from all international cricket," Afridi said from London.

"I am dejected and hurt and whatever I said about the coach it was in the best interest of the team."

Afridi, who took over as Test and one-day captain last year, abruptly retired from the longer version of the game after a heavy defeat against Australia at Lord's in July 2010.

He then led Pakistan to two one-day series defeats against England and South Africa before winning a 50-over series in New Zealand and guiding the team to the semi-finals of World Cup 2011 where it lost to eventual champions India.

Afridi lashed out at Waqar on his return from West Indies.

"Everyone should do his job and should be accountable for his work," said Afridi, reportedly irked at Waqar's interference in team selection.

When asked about his reported differences with the coach, Afridi replied: "The differences are not at a stage where they cannot be resolved.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took heed of the public criticism and served a show cause notice to Afridi before announcing that Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq would lead the team in two one-day matches against Ireland.

Pakistan won the series 2-0 under Misbah on Monday.

Afridi said he was roughly treated by the PCB.

"I play for my country and for my people," he said.

"I led the team to the semi-final of the World Cup but the reward was such that I was not sure about my captaincy."

Afridi said his decision to retire was final.

England snatches dramatic Test win

Posted May 31, 2011 06:25:00

England seized one of the most remarkable victories in Test history overnight, beating Sri Lanka by an innings and 14 runs in a match which appeared doomed to end in a frustrating draw.

After 130 overs had been lost to rain in the first Test of a three-match series, England bowled the tourists out for just 82 in a fraction over two hours in their second innings.

The result was a stunning turnaround after only 15 wickets had fallen on the first four days and provided yet more evidence that England's ambition to become the number one Test team in the world is a realistic goal.

The final day started four hours late and England batted for only two overs to allow Ian Bell to reach his hundred, declaring at 5 for 496.

Sri Lanka then began its second innings trailing by 96 runs, and lasted little over two hours before crumbling.

Fast bowler Chris Tremlett sparked the win with the first three wickets and finished with 4 for 40. Off spinner Graeme Swann claimed 4 for 16 and Stuart Broad wrapped up the win with the final two wickets.

England's performance was all the more praiseworthy as it had been reduced to three specialist bowlers when leading paceman James Anderson suffered a side strain in the Sri Lanka first innings.

Sri Lanka struggled immediately when Tharanga Piranavitana was caught at first slip off Tremlett for a duck and skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan was caught and bowled for 10 before tea.

After the interval, Sri Lanka was immediately under pressure once more when Mahela Jayawardene (15) became England and Tremlett's third wicket.

After playing and missing the previous ball, the batsman edged the next delivery to captain Andrew Strauss at first slip.

Jubilant celebrations

It was then 4 for 36 when Thilan Samaraweera (0), batting with an injured elbow, chopped a bottom edge on to his stumps from a ball that turned and kept low from Swann.

The procession of wickets continued as Sri Lanka slipped from 4 for 43 to 7 for 43, starting with the loss of former captain Kumar Sangakkara for 14. The left-hander came forward and prodded at Swann only to edge low down to Strauss at slip for his third catch of the innings.

By this time the 922 spectators, who had either braved the rain or arrived late to watch just under half a day's play, would have sensed that one of Test cricket's most freakish results was about to unfold before their eyes.

The sixth man to depart was all-rounder and number seven batsman Farveez Maharoof (0), caught off a faint edge by wicketkeeper Matt Prior off Swann. He failed in his bid to have the decision reversed on review.

The next victim in the crazy session was first innings centurion Prasanna Jayawardene (3), who was caught down the leg side by Matt Prior off Tremlett. Initially umpire Billy Doctrove rejected England's appeal but it was overturned on review.

The Sri Lankans looked to be plummeting towards their lowest Test total of 71 when they slumped to 8 for 52 with Rangana Herath (3) departing lbw to Swann after missing a sweep.

Ajantha Mendis drove Swann through the covers for a boundary but a rally in which Thisara Perera counter-attacked briefly for 20, including four fours was soon over.

Perera jabbed a ball heading for his ribcage from Stuart Broad to Ian Bell at shirt leg, an impressive one-handed diving effort.

Last man Suranga Lakmal was the 10th victim two balls later when he edged Broad to third slip Alastair Cook to spark jubilant scenes among the England team.

Saying goodbye to the Spin Doctor Terry Jenner

Family, friends, colleagues and cricket legends will form together to honour the Spin Doctor, Terry Jenner, with a public funeral at Adelaide Oval this afternoon. One time student and now Australian cricket icon Shane Warne will attend the funeral to say farewell to the mentor that helped to coach him into one of the world's finest bowlers.

Warne will be joined by South Australian spinner Cullen Bailey and SA cricket legend Ken 'K.G.' Cunningham, who will also pay their respects at the service.

Terry's health had been poor after suffering a severe heart attack in England in April 2010.

In September of 2010 the Australian cricket community helped to raise funds for his medical expenses.

A testimonial dinner was held in Terry's honour on Thursday 21 October 2010, with Shane Warne, Doug Walters, Dan Cullen and Cullen Bailey all sharing their experiences of time spent with him.

Terry had just recovered from having an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted and was able to take the stage at the end of the night and thank those who had attended.

In December 2010 he was a special guest of the Adelaide Oval at the unveiling of a statue of Jason Gillespie during the Adelaide Ashes test.

With health failing, Terry spent his last days surrounded by family members, and passed away peacefully at his Brighton home in Adelaide last Wednesday.

He was 66 years old.

His wife Ann wrote on his blog, "He wanted to be at home with his family and we were able to share the last few days with him.

"Many people will miss him and the world will not be the same now he has gone, but in many ways it will be a better thing for him."

The North and South Gates of the Adelaide Oval will be opened and manned from 4:00pm this afternoon, with the service to be held in the Oval's Dining Room from 5:10pm.

Former Pakistan captain retires from international cricket

Last Updated: Tue, 31 May 2011 11:46:00 +1000

Pakistan's former Test and one-day cricket captain Shahid Afridi has announced his retirement from the international game.

Afridi, 31, was recently dumped as one-day captain, and resigned as Test skipper after a big loss in England last year.

Afridi has now fallen out with coach Waqar Younis, and says he will not play for Pakistan again unless there is a change in leadership at Board level.

Afridi told Geo News television he could no longer perform for a cricket board that did not respect its senior players.

"I have decided to retire from international cricket because I am not in a mental frame of mind to continue playing under this board," the 31-year-old said.

Afridi says as one-day captain he was not consulted over squad selection and no one bothered to speak to him before his sacking.

Afridi appeared in 27 tests, 325 one-day games and 43 Twenty20s for Pakistan.

He said he would continue to play domestic cricket and in overseas Twenty20 leagues.

Prasanna puts Sri Lanka on top

Posted May 28, 2011 08:04:00

Prasanna Jayawardene's hundred left Sri Lanka well-placed against England on the second day of the first Test at Cardiff.

The wicketkeeper's 112 was the cornerstone of Sri Lanka's first innings 400, a total that appeared some way off when he came in at 4 for 159.

Sri Lanka then collected a prize scalp shortly before the close when England captain Andrew Strauss edged Suranga Lakmal, who might not have been playing but for injuries to first-choice seamers Dilhara Fernando and Nuwan Pradeep, to Mahela Jayawardene at second slip for 20.

At stumps, England was 1 for 47 - a deficit of 353.

Ashes hero Alastair Cook was 24 not out and nightwatchman James Anderson, unable to bowl for periods on Friday because of a back and side strain, unbeaten on one in England's first Test since completing a 3-1 series win in Australia in January.

Sri Lanka was faltering when Prasanna Jayawardene took guard but the 31-year-old, whose Test career has been revived by the decision of former captain Kumar Sangakkara to give up the gloves, was undaunted.

"This is my first Test in England so I am very happy," Prasanna Jayawardene said after batting for more than four hours. "I love handling pressure.

"This is a new challenge but the management trust me and I showed that," he added of his promotion to number 6.

Prasanna Jayawardene gave just one chance before reaching his century when, on 89, he edged off-spinner Graeme Swann only for first slip Strauss to drop the sharp catch.

The keeper played a stroke worthy of Mahela Jayawardene, when he cover-drove Swann for four to reach 96.

Then a legside three off fast bowler Chris Tremlett took him to a third Test hundred, and first against England, off 147 balls with a dozen boundaries.

England was frustrated Friday by the controversial review system.

The English twice thought they had all-rounder Farveez Maharoof lbw only to fail on review both times.

That meant they had no reviews left but there was more replay torment ahead.

Rangana Herath had made 10 when he edged Tremlett to Strauss. However, the batsman stood his ground and the umpires referred the decision to Australia's Rod Tucker.

The third umpire, as often happens in cases of low catches, decided there was enough doubt to rule in the batsman's favour.

Prasanna Jayawardene was well supported by Test debutant Thisara Perera and Herath in eighth and ninth wicket stands of 68 and 51 respectively that compounded England's agony.

He was eventually out when caught behind off seamer Stuart Broad, making his comeback to Test cricket after a stomach injury in Adelaide in November ruled him out of most of the Ashes.

The 24-year-old Broad, in returning 2 for 113 on Friday, became the second youngest England bowler after Ian Botham to take 100 Test wickets.

"I would rather have done it when they were 90 for one," Broad said of his milestone.

"We are still in a decent position but Sri Lanka batted fantastically well in foreign conditions and applied themselves brilliantly."

Sri Lanka resumed Friday on 2 for 133 after skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan (50), who won the toss, and Sangakkara (11) had exited late on Thursday's rain-marred first day.

Mahela Jayawardene failed to add to his overnight 4 and he was soon followed back into the pavilion by opener Tharanga Paranavitana, who made a valuable 66.

Thilan Samaraweera rode his luck before Anderson had him caught by second slip Swann for 58 to end a stand of 84 with Prasanna Jayawardene.

At 5 for 243, England would have reckoned on running through the rest of the batting but Prasanna Jayawardene had other ideas.

England's centurions punish Sri Lanka

Posted May 29, 2011 06:25:00

Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott both made centuries against Sri Lanka in the first Test at Cardiff overnight as England carried on from where it left off in Australia.

Cook was 129 not out and Trott 125 not as England closed on 2 for 287 in reply to Sri Lanka's first innings 400, a deficit of 113, at stumps on the third day in this opening match of a three-Test series.

Cook's hundred was also his second in as many Test innings following the 189 he made in an innings win against Australia in Sydney in January.

That victory completed a 3-1 Ashes series triumph during which the Essex opener scored a mammoth 766 runs at 127.66.

Meanwhile, Cook and Trott's so far unbroken stand of 240 was their fourth century partnership in eight Tests, following 116 against Pakistan at The Oval, 329 in the Ashes opener against Australia at Brisbane and 173 in Adelaide.

"It's nice to score a few again and continue from Australia," Cook told reporters.

"It's pleasing personally but it's also put us in a position where we can win this game.

"This was an opportunity for Trotty and I to make big ones (hundreds). The only way we can win this game is to bat once and bat big."

South Africa-born Trott is now averaging more than 66 in Tests - only the legendary Don Bradman with 99.94 has a better mark among batsmen who have played at least 20 innings.

"He has been a revelation for us since coming in during the 2009 Ashes," said Cook. "His stats are phenomenal.

"Having that rock at three means that our batting order is very settled and we have every base covered. But we will never stop trying to improve."

Cook, 71 not out at tea, square cut seamer Suranga Lakmal for four to complete his 17th Test century, at the youthful age of just 26, in just over five hours off 224 balls with eight boundaries.

Trott was not far behind in reaching three figures.

The 30-year-old Warwickshire batsman completed a sixth century in just his 19th Test when, after Sri Lanka had taken the new ball, he cover-drove Lakmal for an eighth boundary - a shot that also raised a stand of 200 with Cook.

England, before play on Saturday, announced James Anderson would not bowl again this match because of a side strain he suffered on Friday, with the swing specialist now doubtful for next week's second Test at Lord's.

However, he was deemed fit enough to resume as nightwatchman when the match got underway again after rain washed out Saturday's morning session.

Neither Anderson nor England had added to their score when he edged spinner Ajantha Mendis to Mahela Jayawardene at slip.

That left England 2 for 47, 353 runs adrift of a Sri Lanka total founded on a century from wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene and several fifties.

England, whose attack had now been reduced to just three specialist bowlers, badly needed batsmen to cash in on a typically good Sophia Gardens pitch.

Cook and Trott duly obliged against a Sri Lanka side which had been forced to play this match without in-form seamers Dilhara Fernando and Nuwan Pradeep, both ruled out through injury.

The remaining bowlers generally lacked either the raw speed or, Mendis apart, the guile to worry England's third-wicket duo.

Cook though did give one chance on his way to a fifth hundred in nine completed Test innings when, on 87, he swept left-arm spinner Rangana Herath only for Tharanga Paranavitana, who had anticipated well at short leg, to drop the difficult catch.

Hussey stars as Chennai wins IPL

Updated May 29, 2011 08:16:00

The clinical Chennai Super Kings clinched their second Indian Premier League title in a row with a 58-run thrashing of Royal Challengers Bangalore in a lop-sided final.

Opener Murali Vijay cracked 95 runs off just 52 balls to help the defending champions pile up 5 for 205 before Ravichandran Ashwin removed Bangalore's openers early, ensuring a fine win for the hosts at a packed Chidambaram Stadium.

League-topper Bangalore, which was seeking its maiden IPL title, folded up at 8 for 147 off 20 overs.

It was Chennai's eighth win on the trot at home this season, underlining its dominance in home conditions.

The home team owed its win to Vijay whose record 159-run stand for the first wicket with Australian Michael Hussey (63) set the platform for a winning total after captain MS Dhoni elected to bat first.

Their stand surpassed the 155-run partnership between Adam Gilchrist and Venkatsai Laxman against Mumbai in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.

"I was concentrating on just converting my start today, as it hasn't always happened this season," said Vijay, named man of the match.

"This (Chennai) is a special unit to be part of and to retain the title feels really great."

Bangalore's chase was derailed early with off-spinner Ashwin (3 for 16) getting rid of the dangerous Chris Gayle for a duck in the very first over.

Gayle, who still finished as the highest run-getter with 608 runs from 12 innings, offered an outside edge which was snapped up by Dhoni behind the wickets.

Gayle's dismissal triggered a collapse with Bangalore losing their next six wickets inside 11 overs to be reduced to 6 for 70, a situation from which they could never really recover.

Saurabh Tiwary offered some resistance with an unbeaten 42 but the other Bangalore batsmen simply caved in under pressure.

"It would have been a much better game if we could have put up a bowling performance like on Friday (against Mumbai) but it was not to be," Bangalore captain Daniel Vettori said.

"I think 160-170 would have been chaseable but their openers took the game away from us."

Vijay, pointed out as the weak link in the Chennai line-up after an indifferent run with the bat in the tournament, decided to make amends at the big stage, unleashing six sixes and four fours in his blazing knock.

Hussey also impressed, hitting three sixes and as many boundaries in his 45-ball innings before holing out to Abhimanyu Mithun near the boundary ropes off left-arm spinner Syed Mohammad.

Vijay, who seemed to struggle in hot and humid conditions during the later part of his innings, missed out on a well-deserved century when he offered a simple catch to Vettori off paceman Sreenath Aravind.

Aravind struck again off the very next ball to remove Dhoni, caught off a full toss by Virat Kohli after making 22 which included two sixes in one over by Gayle.

Gayle also picked up two wickets in two balls, sending back Albie Morkel and Suresh Raina in the 20th over with his wily off-breaks.

Terry Jenner passes away

Terry Jenner, the Original Spin Doctor, has passed away after a long illness at the age of 66.

Jenner, who was born in Mount Lawley, WA, played 9 Tests and 1 ODI for Australia between 1970 and 1976, but it is as a spin coach and ABC broadcaster that he is best remembered.

Primarily a leg spin bowler, he took a promising cricketer under his wing in the early 1990s and groomed him to become the best in the world.

That cricketer was Shane Warne, who went on to claim over 700 Test wickets and is recognised as one of the best bowlers ever to have played the game.

Despite not being able to cement a spot in the Australian Test line up, Jenner established himself as a proficient first class cricketer, first with Western Australia and the South Australia, winning three Sheffield Shield titles with SA.

His 131 first class matches yielding 389 wickets at an average of 32.2, including fourteen five wicket hauls and one ten wicket haul and he also regularly contributed with the bat, scoring ten half-centuries.

Following his retirement from first class cricket, Jenner took up a role as the spin bowling coach at the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide, and he also was a crucial part of the ABC broadcast team, covering the Test Cricket for Grandstand.

ABC cricket commentator Jim Maxwell said Jenner was a joy to work alongside.

"He was a commentator for more than 10 years and he brought a lot of wisdom and insight to the game," Maxwell said.

"He's a rarity in the game - he bowled leg spin.

"Not too many people can do that and play for their country, so that in itself is quite a feat."

In April last year, Jenner suffered a severe heart attack in England, which left him seriously ill and drained his personal finances.

He spent 12 weeks in hospital in London before being able to return to his Adelaide home in June.

In September the cricket community banded together to raise money for his medical expenses, and he was a special guest at the unveiling of a statue of Jason Gillespie at the Adelaide Oval during the Ashes Test match in December.

The 66-year-old passed away peacefully after spending the past week with his family.

His partner Anne posted the news on Jenner's blog site, revealing his funeral will be held at Adelaide Oval.

"Many people will miss him and the world will not be the same now he has gone but it many ways it will be a better thing for him," Anne wrote on Jenner's Blog site

The real test sometimes comes after the cricket

Sport at the highest level is a bit of a millionaires' playground these days but, it wasn't always like that.

Gary Gilmour played 15 test matches for Australia and was part of World Series Cricket but gave the game away at the age of 28 because he didn't see how it was going to pay the bills.

Hard to imagine now, but it was an easy decision for him at that time, even though things weren't all plain sailing in retirement.

Some of his former team mates and the Australian Cricketers Association, made up of retired players, helped Gilmour out when he was in por health and needed a liver transplant.

He is now living healthily in Newcastle and can reflect on the fact that life after sport isn't always the glitz and glamour that we're used to seeing these days.

Terry Jenner, the man with two lives

Posted May 25, 2011 17:28:00

Terry Jenner reckons he had two lives.

The first included Test cricket, gambling addiction and jail.

The second was redemption, culminating in exalted status as cricket's spin bowling guru.

Jenner, who died on Wednesday aged 66, is the only Australian Test cricketer to have been jailed.

The Western Australian native was sentenced to six-and-a-half years' jail in 1988 for stealing money from his employer to pay gambling debts.

Jenner spent 18 months behind bars and believed serving time saved him.

"Going to prison was the beginning of my new life," he said last year.

"I began to rebuild myself inside."

Jenner admitted his life was in a downward spiral until he was jailed.

Rock bottom came some 13 years after he played the last of his nine Test matches for Australia.

Jenner's international cricket career ceased in 1975, the leg-spinning all-rounder unable to definitively stamp himself as a Test regular.

His looping leggies captured 24 Test wickets but they were claimed over a five-year span, with Jenner never able to cement himself in Ian Chappell's outfit.

In the first-class arena, it was a similar story early in Jenner's career.

After making his debut for WA in 1963, Jenner drifted in and out of the state team for the next four years.

In 1967-68, he moved to South Australia and regular outings paid dividends - in 1970, he won his first Test cap on Australia's tour of England.

Jenner spent the next decade playing for SA and carved out a fine first-class career - it ended in 1977, with 389 wickets at an average of 32.18 from 131 games.

But without cricket, Jenner lost his way until jailed for embezzlement while in the grip of gambling addiction.

Spin revolution

Jenner was released from prison in 1990, the same year he first met a young leg-spinner by the name of Shane Warne, and the meeting arguably saved both men.

"First time I saw him, he spun the ball about a metre. It curved in the air - all the things you dream about when you're a spinner," Jenner said of Warne in 2006.

"He didn't dedicate himself at the beginning.

"He had some well-recorded hassles with administration and things.

"But then once he made his decision to play, he dedicated his time to it.

"He revolutionised spin bowling."

He became Warne's self-appointed spin doctor and the partnership of kindred souls gave purpose to Jenner's life.

"The 20 years since I met Shane have just been the best," Jenner said last year.

"In the past 20 years, my life has turned around to the point where you'd want to be me.

"Working with Shane changed everything.

"I was out there earning the respect of people and felt like I'd redeemed myself for the downs I had."

His liaison with Warne opened doors. He was sought by tweakers across the globe, and became the world's pre-eminent wrist spin coach.

But in April last year, while in England on another coaching mission, Jenner had a heart attack.

Doctors thought they would lose him, and he spent nine weeks in hospital fighting for his life.

He survived through sheer pluck and returned to Australia, where he was cared for by family and friends.

Last October, more than 400 people attended a testimonial dinner in Adelaide for the man they knew as TJ.

Warne, Chappell, Doug Walters and Ian Healy were among the cricket identities to hail Jenner as a one-off ... who had two lives.

Warne's mentor Jenner dies

Updated May 25, 2011 17:37:00

Former Australian Test spinner Terry Jenner, who helped mould Shane Warne into one of the world's greatest bowlers, has died in Adelaide at the age of 66.

Jenner played nine Tests for Australia in the 1970s but is best known for being Warne's spinning mentor.

He is also the only Australian Test cricketer to be jailed, spending 18 months in prison in 1988 for stealing money from his employer.

Jenner said working with Warne helped turn his life around.

"Working with Shane changed everything," he said late last year.

"I was out there earning the respect of people and the good news is that I felt like I'd redeemed myself for the downs I had."

Jenner began advising Warne during the champion bowler's brief stint at the Australian Cricket Academy in the early 1990s.

He was regularly at hand during Warne's record-breaking career, providing advice on his action.

His work with Warne also opened commentary doors at the ABC, where he could regularly be heard telling young spinners to "give it a rip".

Jenner was born in Perth in 1944 and represented Western Australia before shifting to South Australia, where he won three Sheffield Shields.

He went on to play for Australia and took 34 wickets in nine matches over a four-year period, including a Test-best 5 for 90 against the West Indies in Trinidad in 1973.

He also played a single one-day international.

Jenner suffered a massive heart attack while coaching in England just over a year ago and never fully regained his health.

Jenner's wife Ann posted on his blog: "Terry passed away peacefully today just a month-and-a-half after the anniversary of his heart attack.

"He wanted to be at home with his family and we were able to share the last few days with him."

His funeral will be held at the Adelaide Oval with the date yet to be announced.

Crickets are insects that belong to the Order Orthoptera and the Class Insecta. Crickets are an important part of the ecosystem since they help in the breakdown of plant material. They are also an important source of food for other animals like small owls, spiders, birds, mice, shrews, snakes, frogs, raccoons and opossums. There are many species of crickets: house crickets, field crickets, ground crickets, cave crickets, mole crickets, camel crickets, snowy tree cricket and mole crickets.

Crickets are reared and used as bait for fish and as food for some pets. The Chinese also use crickets in medicines. They are popularly used as a sport like cock fights. Crickets are also believed to bring luck. Rearing crickets is very easy since they tend to eat anything. Providing a nutritious diet to the crickets is very important as it helps in breeding. Another reason is that the nutrition from the cricket's diet would be passed on to the pets, which each these crickets.

Crickets are omnivores and feed on almost anything-usually organic materials, plant decay, grass, fruits, seedling plants, fungi and even meat. Crickets need good diet otherwise they tend to feed on each other. Cricket foods are commercially available in the market at feed shops. There are specific brands of cricket feed also. For a few crickets, tropical fish make a good meal though it would be expensive. Rolled oats with fresh fruits and vegetables is an ideal food for crickets. Crickets

Crickets are insects that belong to the order Orthoptera. Crickets are an important part of the ecosystem since they help in the breakdown of plant material. They are also an important source of food for other animals like small owls, spiders, birds, mice, shrews, snakes, frogs, raccoons and opossums.

Crickets are generally brown or black in color, have antennae which is as long as the distance from the head to the end of the abdomen and have two kinds of wings: front wings covering nearly the entire abdomen and hind wings that are folded and hidden under the front wings. However, some species of crickets may not have wings at all.

There are many species of crickets: house crickets, field crickets, ground crickets, cave crickets, mole crickets, snowy tree cricket and mole crickets. Crickets live outdoors in open spaces like meadows, pastures and roads. In winter, they go under rocks or logs or inside buildings to escape the cold. They are nocturnal and are very active during the night. Crickets are omnivores and feed on almost anything, usually organic materials, plant decay, grass, fruits, seedling plants, fungi and even meat.

Man has always been fascinated by crickets. Some people even have crickets as pets. The most interesting thing about crickets is the sound they make. They have a unique chirp which many people find attractive. This chirp is actually a way of communication. Crickets make many different kinds of sounds depending on the purpose: a calling note indicating that defense of their territory, an aggressive chirp symbolizing other male intruders to move away, and a quieter call which announces their presence to deaf females. Female crickets are deaf and they can identify males from the smell that emanates from under the wings of the male. Crickets produce the sound by rubbing their forewings against each other. In fact, crickets have gained their name from the French word "Criquer", which means little creaker.

Crickets are reared and used as bait for fishes and as food for some pets. The Chinese also use crickets in medicines. They are popularly used as a sport like cock fights. Crickets are also believed to bring luck. Crickets are very easy to rear. However, crickets can be real pests, especially because the chirping may get very irritating. Crickets also cause damage to plants, seeds of grain crop, stored tubers and fruits, and baler twine. When they enter the house, they can damage clothing, furniture upholstery, draperies etc. since they are very fond of cotton, silk, wool and even rayon and nylon. They also eat paper products.

Crickets can be controlled by using some insecticides like bendiocarb (Ficam D), chlorpyrifos (Dursban, Duration, Empire, and Engage), diatomaceous earth (Answer), propoxur (Baygon), diazinon, pyrethrins, or resmethrin. Drione or Boric Acid and other dust products can be used to treat wall voids and crawl spaces. Granular bait like Larvalur or Niban can also be used indoors and outdoors. Some common outdoor insecticides that can be used are; cyfluthrin (Tempo), cypermethrin (Demon, Cynoff, Cyper-Active), Ficam W or Plus, propetamphos (Safrotin) lambdacyhalothrin (Commadore), or permethrin (Dragnet, Flee).

Who Will Win Cricket World Cup 2011? A Tarot Cards View

Two thousand eleven brings the Cricket World Cup to you, the biggest one day cricket tournament for some time to come. It does not matter how many other cricket tournaments are around the corner including Twenty Twenty IPL tournament but the World cup is a totally different ball game with intense emotions and sense of patriotism involved in each and every game and each and every cricket fans hearts. If we ask fans from each country "Who will win Cricket World Cup 2011?" the response would be the wish and hope that their own country wins it. This cricket world cup is very special, the reasons beings; one, it is played in subcontinent where players are gods and stadiums are battle fields.

The love and passion which one can find in subcontinent can not be seen anywhere in the world. Two, subcontinent pitches are high scoring; add to it the small size of the stadiums, you may expect more sixes and fours hit in this world cup than in any past cricket world cups. Three, the majority of teams are in great form. You can not name a single team which is not expected to give more than 100 percent in this tournament. We do not know who will win this year's cricket world cup but I have made a few tarot cards and cartomancy predictions as to the expected performances of the teams involved in this cricket world cup 2011. (Namely)

Australia: Tarot cards show that Australian cricket team in this edition of Cricket world cup would experience unexpected good news and also team will reap the reward of its energy and efforts and might be recognised for the same. Outcome will be happy which will give emotional joy and happiness. They will face no difficulty and no obstruction will be on their way. This team might get gift which they must have expected. This might be another cricket world cup win for them.
Bangladesh: My Tarot readings say that for Bangladesh cricket team money energy is blocked. If given second chance this team can perform better and by that it can be seen that Bangladesh cricket team might have close matches and may suddenly loose a winning match because of their mistakes.
Canada: Tarot predictions show that there is good chance to achieve emotional happiness which is hoped for. Team will get happiness and success in all endeavours but more on emotional side. Thus the readings show that in this edition of cricket world cup Canadians will perform better than their past shows. This will bring more emotional happiness than the material happiness to the side. Winning the world cup is not what this indicates. But recognition is there.
England: Cartomancy readings show that English cricket team has to really work hard and work out to face the challenge. They might get desired goals but with lots of efforts. Efforts might bring unexpected surprises at the same time the team needs careful planning otherwise team will only learn lessons for future. So careful planning is the key for English.
India: Tarot cards and Cartomancy readings indicate that Indian cricket team will fight with more energy than in past. There are cards which show money as well as emotional happiness and success at any endeavour of the tournament. Luck is in their favour. This luck card is not present in the readings of other cricket teams in the tournament. So other teams need to be careful of Indians. Only hurdle which can be noted here is that extra efforts are needed to achieve desired goals. If they feel complacent after showing good performance in the beginning or they do not take weaker teams seriously, they might ruin their chances. World cup can be theirs again with a bit of extra effort.
Ireland: Tarot cards are not good for Ireland. They will face lots of problems. The teams planning and strategies, may not work out well. To get success they require lots of efforts and there are grave difficulties in path of their goals.
Kenya: My readings say that things are out of control for Kenyans cricket team and there is no clarity in their plans to win matches. Tarot cards show a lot of confusion and difficulty to get emotional stability and happiness. Thus I conclude that this cricket team may not show good performance.
Netherlands: Tarot cards show that this cricket team will play with full energy and full horse power. Success and money is indicated but with the setbacks in reaching their goals. Things will not move as expected. We might see Netherlands perform better than its earlier shows in the cricket world cup. cartomancy readings indicate that although they will perform very well but they will need to plan a good strategy if that want to give result to their efforts.
New Zealand: My readings of New Zealand Tarot cards show that this cricket team will show a lot of efforts and energy in reaching their goals but all this will be of no use. There are hurdles blocks and obstacles in their pathway and they will need to put more than 100% to attain success. New Zealand cricket team need to take every team seriously as a weaker team might be a road block for them too.
Pakistan: Cartomancy and Tarot readings for Pakistan Cricket team say that they will play in best of spirits with great energy and enthusiasm. There are chances to get emotional satisfaction and success. Like tarot cards for Australian cricket team if Pakistan cricket team plays will full spirit and employ better strategies and keep stable mindset, they might pull off this edition of cricket world cup. Their chances are high too.
South Africa: Tarot cards for South African cricket team are very favourable. Like Australia and Pakistan cricket teams they will have to employ full efforts and energy as well which in turn indicates financial stability for which they have hoped for. Any stinginess in their efforts may cost them crucial matches. Chances are that this team might win the cricket world cup 2011.
Sri lanka: Tarot cards for Sri Lankan cricket team indicates lots of hopes and wishes which will pump up the performance of the team but their efforts might fail to bring any fruits. Cards also indicate frustration and disappointment. Key players are the only solution of this. This team needs their key cricketers to give best performances otherwise if the important players fail to perform, whole teams moral will be down. Chances of winning cricket world cup 2011 are very low.
West Indies: Very positive tarot cards indicate that Windies cricket team will perform with great emotions and positive energy. Money is on the cards. Lot of chances are there to win as things are falling in place. They will perform with positive attitude. My advice would be that if they do not lose this positive attitude and stick to it Cricket world cup 2011 might show in their closet.
Zimbabwe: Tarot cards for Zimbabwe Cricket team are more or less similar to what we have observed with Ireland's predictions. I don't think their performance will be up to the mark will have to face small small problems in their matches. They need to plan very well before that go out on the field and they might face defeat even with the new teams playing against them.

In all these readings West Indies team got the best tarot cards. This is because positive energy can be seen in their cards. Other teams which got great cards were India, South Africa, Australia and Pakistan cricket team. Key Indications to win cricket world cup 2011 for Australia is Positive Good News, for India it is The Good Luck, for Pakistan it is the enthusiastic energy, for South Africa it is efforts and energy and again for West Indies is Positive energy. These predictions are based on the Tarot and Cartomancy readings done in accordance to the expected performance of the cricket teams. We can only predict what might happen in the world cup 2011 but then teams actual performances and results will show the crucial outcome and this edition of cricket world cup is highly anticipated. All we can say is best of luck to the teams and hope they provide a great cricket show for the fans.

Hilfenhaus facing Zimbabwe selection trial

Posted May 23, 2011 16:28:00

Industrious paceman Ben Hilfenhaus faces a probable selection trial for this year's Test tour of Sri Lanka after being named in an Australia A squad travelling to Zimbabwe next month.

Hilfenhaus joined spinner Jason Krejza and Queensland's Chris Lynn from outside the provisional squad list for the Zimbabwe tour, which will feature a one-day tri-series against the hosts and South Africa as well as two four-day matches against Zimbabwe.

The burly Tasmanian quick was a member of Australia's attack for the final Ashes Test against England at the SCG in January but faces a challenge from rising stars, such as Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, to retain his spot for the tour of Sri Lanka later in the year.

Hilfenhaus struggled during the Ashes, taking seven wickets at 59.28 in the four matches he played.

"The fast bowlers will be led by the experienced Ben Hilfenhaus who we are keen to get plenty of cricket into following a good break from last season," national chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said in a statement.

"Also Mitchell Starc is returning from injury but performed well in Australian colours against Sri Lanka back in early November.

"They will be well supported by Trent Copeland and Luke Butterworth who both had stand-out seasons for their respective states."

New South Wales teenage bolter Pat Cummins was not available for the tour because of a back injury.

Australia's next Test appearance will be on a tour of Sri Lanka in August-September, although dates are yet to be confirmed.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine will lead both the one-day and four-day squads, which departs for Africa on June 25.

There will be four changes between the two forms of the game with Aaron Finch, Nathan Lyon, Lynn and Stephen O'Keefe to be replaced by Michael Beer, Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Jason Krejza for the longer-format matches.

A schedule for the tour's matches is yet to be finalised by Zimbabwe Cricket.

Australia A one-day squad: Tim Paine (c), Callum Ferguson (v-c), Luke Butterworth, Trent Copeland, James Faulkner, Ben Hilfenhaus, Aaron Finch, Nathan Lyon, Chris Lynn, Nic Maddison, Mitch Marsh, Mitch Starc, Stephen O'Keefe, David Warner

Australia A four-day squad: Tim Paine (c), Callum Ferguson (v-c), Michael Beer, Luke Butterworth, Trent Copeland, James Faulkner, Ben Hilfenhaus, Usman Khawaja, Jason Krejza, Phillip Hughes, Nic Maddinson, Mitch Marsh, Mitch Starc, David Warner

Punjab knocked out by Deccan

Posted May 22, 2011 09:46:00

Shikhar Dhawan cracked an unbeaten 95 and Amit Mishra took a hat-trick as Deccan Chargers knocked Kings XI Punjab out of the Indian Premier League with an 82-run victory.

The second match between Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors was abandoned due to rain. Delhi, which finished last in the 10-team league, was 3 for 56 off 10.1 overs when play was called off.

Left-handed opener Dhawan, who hit one six and 14 fours in his 57-ball knock, put on 131 for the opening wicket with Ravi Teja (60) as Deccan made 2 for 198 before bowling Punjab out for 116.

Skipper Adam Gilchrist top-scored with a 37-ball 51 for Punjab, which put in a below-par batting and fielding performance. The captain, who hit two sixes and six fours, added 61 for the third wicket with Dinesh Karthik (11).

Deccan virtually wrapped up the match when Australian paceman Daniel Christian dismissed Gilchrist and Karthik in the space of three balls to reduce Punjab to 4 for 84 in 11 overs.

Leg-spinner Mishra's hat-trick came in his third over when he removed Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh and Ryan Harris to eventually finish with 4 for 9.

Chennai (18 points), Bangalore (17), Kolkata (16) and Mumbai (16) have now qualified for the play-offs. They are followed by Punjab (14), Rajasthan (13), Deccan (12), Kochi (12), Pune (9) and Delhi (9).

Deccan, which finished with six wins in 14 matches, was already out of contention while Punjab needed a victory in its last match to keep its hopes alive.

Teja, dropped thrice during his 41-ball knock, hit two sixes and five fours in his team's final match, watched by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama who also met players before the start of the game.

He reached his half-century in style, hitting a six off leg-spinner Piyush Chawla who conceded 48 in his four overs. Deccan plundered 113 runs in the last 10 overs to set a stiff target.
